Triple-A rivals Sacramento River Cats and Reno Aces do battle on Twitter

The heated rivalry that developed between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers was hands down the game's best feud in 2013. There wasn’t even a close second.

That feud is fully expected to carry over into the 2014 season, beginning with the season-opening series in Australia in late March, and it may prove difficult to top coming off their war of words following the Dodgers division championship pool party at Chase Field. But that doesn’t mean they won’t get a little competition. In fact, there may already be a strong early contender that also involves the Diamondbacks.

In this case, it’s not Arizona’s major league team that's bantering back and forth with a division rival, but rather their Triple-A team, the Reno Aces. Over the past few weeks, the Aces official Twitter page has engaged in their own war of tweet with the official Twitter of the Sacramento River Cats, who are the Triple-A affiliate of the Oakland A’s.

Here's how it all began.

An exchange of seemingly innocent jabs, but jabs are jabs and often times lead to haymakers.

In this case, though, it started off at a simmer.

But by the end of the year, those haymakers were flying.

At this point the Aces double up to land an overhand right. Or maybe it's a left.

Stiff but clean shot. Now, just don't go bringing the mascots into this thing.

Despite the hard fall, it looks like both sides are still standing after this round. We'll have to go to the Big League Stew scoreboard.

Both teams landed shots squarely on the jaw as the round ended, but we're scoring it 10-9 for the River Cats for their impressive flurry in response to the championship ring tweet. They hit a couple home runs there that buckled Reno's knees and had the referee checking the eyes.

Now we'll just have to wait and see if round 2 takes place on Twitter, or if the two sides are able to hold off until their opening series in 2014. Either way, it should be fun to monitor the happenings. We'll keep our scorecard handy.
