Five quick links to start your day ...

1. Big thanks and a big bouquet of flowers are in order for Sandy Scully, who gave her husband, Vin, permission to return to the Dodgers in 2009 for his 60th year of broadcasting. In announcing the news, Scully gave us a not-so-subtle reminder his time in the booth is growing short. (Translation: There will soon be one less big reason for those of us back east to stay up and watch the West Coast games on Extra Innings.

"I'm really weary talking about beyond this afternoon," Scully said. "There's a beginning, a middle and an end for all of us. I know that I have a lot more yesterdays than I have tomorrows." [Los Angeles Times]

2. Now that's what Jeff Passan was looking for from Johan Santana on Sunday night. (At least that's what I assume he was talking about.) [New York Daily News]

3. With the way the rotation shakes out through the end of the year, it appears that Rich Harden won't be pitching in the NLDS if Lou Piniella doesn't readjust the rotation (and he's not saying if her will or not). I think that sort of defeats the entire purpose of acquiring Harden in the first place (as well as smacks of Piniella "saving" Carlos Zambrano for Game 4 in 2007). But that's also assuming Harden's arm remains attached to his body through the next three weeks. [Chicago Tribune]

4. Yankee and Shea Stadium officials insist they will be vigilant with guarding against would-be souvenir hunters as the days for both parks tick down. According to this article, someone actually tried to steal a toilet seat at Yankee Stadium. If you've ever been in a bathroom in the Bronx, I think we can all agree officials should have just let the guy have that one. [NYDN]

5. For some reason, I thought the Steelers' dominating victory over the Texans' might have delayed Pittsburgh's complaining about the Pirates for at least one day, if not until next April entirely. Turns out I was wrong. [Where Have You Gone, Andy Van Slyke?]
