Editor's note: We're saying goodbye to teams mathematically eliminated from the 2013 MLB season with a toast. Want to contribute? Follow @BigLeagueStew on Twitter and await our call for submissions. Next up, the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Surprise, surprise. The Arizona Diamondbacks showed us something this year — they were better than what we expected. You thought we were going to say they showed grit, huh? Well, we thought about it and almost went there.
But the Diamondbacks were one of the surprising NL teams, even holding down first place in the NL West for a solid two months, from May 17-July 21. They'll finish in second place, which deserves a toast.
To the D-backs, for doing cool things like drafting a paralyzed player and having a luchador mascot. To the D-backs, for not just fighting with the Dodgers in the standings, but on the field too. Kirk Gibson & Co. don't play around. To the D-backs, for allowing Brandon McCarthy to be the best at Twitter. To the D-backs, for blah blah blah swimming pool.
We're not going to bogart this toast (or the pool jokes). Here's what the people had to say about the 2013 Diamondbacks. Add your own toast in the comments. Extra points if you don't make a pool reference.
