Spring headlines: Roy Oswalt set to announce future plans

Roy Oswalt may finally be wearing a new uniform by day's end. (AP)Baseball is back! Here at Big League Stew, we'll take a quick dash around the league each morning in an attempt to keep you updated on all the springtime storylines.

Did you ever have to make up your mind? Roy Oswalt has dawdled all offseason, but it's said he's close to finally making a choice from the lovin' spoonful of teams interested in his services. An announcement comes close and MLB Trade Rumors gives us the reminder that the Cardinals, Rangers and Red Sox have all been linked to the 34-year-old right-hander.

    • Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that one of Oswalt's close friends "wouldn't be surprised" if the pitcher takes the Cardinals' deal that he previously was not very impressed with.

    • So at what point does the sweetest sounding phrase in the English language become "Pitchers and catchers ... and every position player who doesn't want to be seen as lazy"? Early report dates are becoming the norm for non-battery members, as evidenced by the fact that seven of the eight Braves starters are already in camp.
    • And if you're not in camp early, you need a good excuse like Ruben Tejada. The Mets' replacement for Jose Reyes is having visa problems and can't get out of Panama.

[Related: Octavio Dotel's wife can't recall all 13 of his MLB teams]

    • Then there's Dodgers pitcher Ronald Belisario. Last year he told everyone he missed camp because he lost his passport in Venezuela, but the truth came out on Wednesday that he had tested positive for cocaine during a drug test at the U.S. embassy. He'll be suspended for the first 25 games of the 2012 season.

    • Will Robin Ventura drop more "o-bombs" this season than Ozzie Guillen dropped f-words? Probably not, but the crutch word for the South Side's new manager is obvious.

    • Speaking of Chicago managers who favored a certain word, Lou Piniella will say "look" roughly 28,000 times in the 20-30 games he'll work for the YES Network this year.

Joe Maddon on Zim Bear: "It's cuddly, it's warm, it's cute. It's something you definitely don't want to take to bed with you.''

    • Ryan Howard is spending his rehab time with reruns of "The Real Housewives."

    • One final update on one of the more important baseball stories this week: Carlos Beltran tells Derrick Goold that he has received the bill for Jonathon Niese's nose job and intends to make good.

Spring training has started, so don't miss a beat ...

Related: Listen to any Charlie Manuel interview and try to keep track of the "Y'know & like"s. I did it once and counted 155 in a 7-minute interview.

When all is like said and y'know, done, he'll likely be taking his "Y'know & like"s to, y'know like Cooperstown. Y'know?

Well, y'know & like, I'm not arguing about that, it's just like y'know & like no one should make like a y'know, like a drinking game out of that y'know acceptance speech, like y'know & like unless they want to like... die.

I'm surprised Oswalt has not signed with someone. He would make a solid 3rd starter for a two year incentive laden contract. That is.........if he wants to pitch somewhere.

Apparently he is waiting until midseason to sign with anyone....unbelievable lol

My Giants would like to have him. I would take him over Barry Zito any day. But yet again, he has lingering back problems so probably isn't a good idea to sign him.

Roy's on the downside of his career......the Cubs will sign him for $10 million a year for 3 years. They're just that foockin' stoopid!

he's regressed to a 500 pitcher at best...but by todays standards it seems 500 pitchers are a hot commodity...

Ron Howard? Isn't that funny? Taking some swings? Isn't that all he ever does? Did he ever come through in the clutch? This was the best though, when he made a weak out and fell down. What do you think, are we paying him too much?

        Who's Ron Howard?

Oswalt's back problems the past few years have been documented; Roy even said last year that if his career was over, he could be at peace with that ... BUT since the physicals seem to have all indicated that he can still pitch, what a shame that he didn't get to the Cardinals before their marvelous pitching coach retired.

The Phils won the trade for Oswalt but the Cards were also talking about trading for him; the pitching coach felt he could get Oswalt back to to dominating form. Irony if Oswalt ends up with the Cards two years later but Duncan is retired.

The Rangers are rich in pitching...they do not need Roy Oswalt.
Roy is on the downside of his career and he's apparently unwilling to openly admit it, though he knows inside..
So he needs a Winner now.

Cards are done. They ain't goin' nowhere. All respect to the Cards, but there's no repeat in their future.

Red Sox is a team in turmoil, it's unlikely they can battle back, especially given the strength of the AL East. They will be lucky to beat the Rays, much less the Yankees.

The Tigers would probably be the best fit for Oswalt, but let me remind that the last two pennants fly in Arlington.
      so...
Oswalt needs the Rangers, who, despite a few large question marks, are still the AL team to beat.

I'm writing this at 1:10 Central time. by the time it's posted, Oswalt may have already made his announcement, whatever it is.
      So.......

      PLAY BALL!

The Cardinals are very much still a contender. They still have Carpenter and Wainwright is coming back, and Berkman should have a decent year and they still have good hitters like Freese and John Jay and Allen Craig. I think they will miss Pujols less than the Brewers miss Fielder. And this is from a Cubs fan!

he isnt going to choose a team today. I bet he announces he will sit out the beginning of a season and wait until a contender has a need for a SP.

I hope noone signs this greedy injury prone hasbeen!
      • Guy 2 months ago
If he wasnt greedy he would have signed with the tigers when they made him an offer. I bet he doesn't even pitch 20 games (without a skip in the rotation)
      • mike h 2 months ago
I dont know if I would call him greedy, but he clearly overestimated the market. Personally, I think hes been getting bad advice from his agent. Most of the time its the agents idea. The agents are ruining sports!

So true Mike H, but in the end, it's his decision.

man if the tigers for some reason picked up oswalt their rotation would be ridiculous on top of their already insane offense
