CHICAGO — Fans at U.S. Cellular Field were expected to greet the debut of Alex Rodriguez with a shower of boos and they didn't disappoint when the New York Yankees star came to the plate to lead off the top of the second inning on Monday night.

Here's how the announced crowd of 27,948 fans greeted A-Rod after news of his 211-game suspension filtered down earlier in the afternoon. Rodriguez, batting cleanup, responded by looping a single to left field off White Sox starter Jose Quintana. A-Rod received similar boos before his other three at-bats during the night and went 1 for 4 during New York's 8-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox

Meanwhile, here's how closed captioning transcribed the scene as it unfolded:

Though the fans weren't as loud as say, a packed house at Fenway Park (or even a non-plussed gathering in the Bronx), the relatively decent crowd at U.S. Cellular Field did what they were supposed to do. Rodriguez drew his first boos of the night about 20 minutes before game time when he jogged from the right field line toward center. One man chanted "P-E-Ds" in rhythmic fashion.

A short while later, he was booed when White Sox public address announcer Gene Honda read Rodriguez's name in the Yankees' lineup.

Of course, none of those fans were booing or saying anything about steroids when Rodriguez came out of the dugout before the game to sign autographs for a large crowd that was gathered in the seats behind the plate.

Baseball season's in full swing. Don't miss a thing.
