New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez has become used to being hounded by paparazzi, sports writers and autograph collectors. But by an actual hound? Well, that has to be a first.

In a humorous moment before Sunday's game at Yankee Stadium, A-Rod was eyed suspiciously by Sgt. Rex, an explosives-sniffing German Shepherd that was being honored with his Marine handler Megan Leavey. The pair completed 100 missions together, survived a roadside bomb in 2006 and were recently reunited in the United States after Rex's military service came to an end.

Yankees president Randy Levine helped Leavey, a Purple Heart recipient, cut through the military's  red tape when it came to adopting 10-year-old Rex for the rest of his life. The successful procedure then led to the classy celebration the team put on before Sunday's game against the Mariners.

But while Rex allowed Nick Swisher to approach Leavey and present her with a jersey signed by all the Yankees without incident, he took exception with A-Rod's delivery of a Tiffany & Co. charm that had "Rex" engraved on it. According to the New York Daily News, Rex jumped up in front of Leavey, causing A-Rod to jump back before reaching home plate.

The good news is that A-Rod was eventually able to make the handoff and even give Rex a pat on the head. We're hoping the two got a chance to talk later about what it's like to live in a doghouse.

In all seriousness, you might not know that A-Rod is actually a dog lover. He used to own a German Shepherd named Gypsy, who sadly died of cancer at age 5. There's also the fact that his girlfriend, Torrie Wilson, owns two chihuahuas. The pair got loose on a flight earlier this year, leading a half-informed Kristen Bell to incorrectly surmise that A-Rod let the pups loose on purpose in order to get her attention and flirt. (We'll take "Paragraphs we never thought we'd write for $400," Alex.)

Woof!
