Report: Scott Boras says Stephen Drew has three-year, $39 million deal on table

Super agent Scott Boras has been working hard these past couple weeks to bring attention to his two main clients that remain unsigned. The players are shortstop Stephen Drew and first baseman/designated hitter Kendrys Morales, and it was just last weekend Boras claimed both would be willing to sit out until June so that teams wouldn't have to shy away from the compensation aspect.

That seemingly indicated neither client had received a satisfactory offer to that point, which in the case of Drew suggests the multiyear deal he sought wasn’t on the table.

Well, here we are one week later, and apparently something has changed — either the offer or Boras's strategy — because Boras now claims Drew has a large multiyear deal on the table.

Is it believable? Maybe, but it would be much more believable if Drew had already signed it, because there‘s very little chance a better deal would come along.

What makes it questionable is that the Detroit Tigers have a new opening at shortstop with Jose Iglesias expected to miss a majority of the season with fractures in his shins and may be showing interest in Drew on a one-year deal. Boras, as he’s done successfully so many times before, is likely posturing to get Detroit — or maybe someone else — to bid against themselves and over commit.

It’s what Boras does. It’s why he’s successful and always in demand as an agent. But chances are it won’t lead to anything significant for Drew. A one-year deal with some incentives and an opportunity to build value is likely where it begins and ends. But with opening day now less than 10 days away, we should know the answers for sure relatively soon.
