Report: Johan Santana close to minor-league deal with Orioles

It looks like the Baltimore Orioles are continuing their spring shopping spree. Next on their list? Rebabbing ex-Cy Young winner Johan Santana. According to MASN's Roch Kubatko, the Orioles are close to a minor-league deal with Santana, who missed all of 2013 after shoulder surgery.

Santana was spotted at the Orioles spring complex Monday and Kubatko's sources tell him the deal is just about done:

A team official confirmed that Santana was here, and a source said a minor league deal is almost completed. Santana, 34, hasn't pitched since 2012 due to surgery last April to repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder. This was his second such procedure.

The Orioles have made a number of additions to flip the script on what was a ho-hum offseason until a month ago. But they all come with baggage. The O's signed Ubaldo Jimenez to a four-year deal after his rebound season in 2013. They also added Nelson Cruz on a one-year deal for $8 million. The money means Cruz could be a steal, but he's coming off a PED suspension.

Santana, meanwhile, isn't expected to be ready until May or June. He threw last week for seven teams and barely topped 80 mph. However, he's Johan Santana. He was once one of the best pitchers in the game.

He's worth taking a flyer on for a team like the Orioles who are trying to add a few more pieces to a strong core, hoping they can keep up with the rest of the AL East.
