ORLANDO — As 'Duk noted on Twitter, MLB Network analyst Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams (right) made a funny about his playing career at baseball's winter meetings on Monday.
"I wonder how many times I was shopped at these things."
Judging by the dates of his career transactions, Williams (pictured on the right) was not only shopped — but traded — twice during the winter meetings.
On Dec. 5, 1988, the Chicago Cubs moved Rafael Palmeiro and Jamie Moyer(notes) to the Texas Rangers for Williams and others. Yeah, Mitch helped the '89 Cubs win the old NL East, but then there's Palmeiro's 500-plus home runs (with baggage) he hit after leaving town.
Five years later, almost to the day, the Philadelphia Phillies sent Mitch packing to the Houston Astros after he allowed the World Series-ending home run to Joe Carter. Mitch pitched like his hair was on fire, yes, but it was bound to burn out.
Further back, in '84, Williams was picked by the Rangers in the Rule 5 draft — which happens every December.
So, yes, Mitch Williams: You have been shopped quite a bit at the winter meetings.
