Nothing like that contract-year motivation. Pablo Sandoval, the sweet-swinging San Francisco Giants third baseman who has never been able to escape weight problems, has reportedly lost 42 pounds this offseason while training in his native Venezuela. That's no typo — 42.

(UPDATE: Sandoval himself isn't confirming Rojas' report. See more below)

Sandoval, 27, is listed at 240 pounds but was closer to 260 last spring. Any Giants fan will tell you that the Panda's weight has fluctuated up and down over the years. Last season, at one point, he dropped 22 pounds because he changed his diet. Sandoval's brother, a chef, started preparing all his meals after graduating from culinary school in Miami.

Pablo's other brother, Mike, has been documenting the offseason transformation through Instagram. Here's a sampling of Sandoval's workouts.

A year ago, Sandoval hit .278/.341/.417 for the Giants with 14 homers and 79 RBIs. But he has potential for better. He hit .330/.387/.556 in 2009 with 25 homers and 90 RBIs. As we said at the top, he'll be a free agent after this season.

Giants fan are hoping for the best, obviously, but if the new-and-improved Panda does too well, that could be bad news. What if he ends up in pinstripes in 2015?

UPDATE: Sandoval tweeted Wednesday morning that he hasn't officially announced how much weight he's lost. He didn't say 42 pounds was wrong, but he didn't say it was right either.

It makes sense that Sandoval wouldn't want people — particularly his team — to expect too much from him, and he wouldn't want the media to oversell his progress. No matter what the number is, though, it's quite evident that Sandoval has committed himself to getting in better shape for 2014 and that's to be applauded.
