In Memory of Gary Carter: Empire State Building shines bright with blue and orange tribute

Empire State Building lit up in honor of Gary Carter. (Tom Kaminski)The state of New York paid tribute to the late Gary Carter on Friday evening with a special blue and orange lighting display at the very top of the Empire State Building,

The tribute was announced on the Empire State Building Observatory's twitter page late this afternoon, and when darkness fell over Manhattan, the Mets' blue and orange lit up the sky as a symbol of recognition not only for the Hall of Fame catcher's contributions to the New York Mets organization over his five year stint — which included a World Series Championship in 1986 — but his even bigger and more meaningful contributions to the surrounding area off the field.

Indeed a very special and fitting tribute to a very special and inspirational human being.

    Well done, New York.

In a world of overpaid prima donnas, self-promoting egomaniacs, skeevy agents and half efforts, (not to mention the excessive bemoaning of losing a drug addicted pop singer) Baseball and professional sports in general have just lost one of the true good guys.

Classy send off for the classiest of guys. Heres a guy who took French classes so he could deliver half his HOF speech in French just to show how much he appreciated the fans of Montreal, who werent even a team anymore when he was elected. Classy. He'll always be a Met to me, and the guy who refused to make the last out in game 6, but this morning i watched the video of his last AB w/ Montreal in 91. Wow. I cried like a little baby. The "kid" will be missed.

I was always a Cubs fan but followed Gary's career with the Expos & the Mets (loved the 86 Mets). A class act & fine human being on & off the field....today's mega stars could & should take lessons from the legacy Carter leaves behind in baseball. Was shocked to hear of his death as I'd not heard the brain tumor news. Godspeed, Gary, may you now rest in the company of the Angels & hopefully the grief your family & friends feel is lessened by the outpouring of public support.

That is a really cool thing for them to do. Also cool: that Gary Carter played for the SF Giants and Dodgers, the two teams that the Mets got their orange and blue team colors from.

NY Mets colors come from much further in history than that. Check the NY City flag -- you find the Orange and Blue. Then check the colors from "New Amsterdam" and the Dutch -- William of Orange. NY Mets colors go back to about 1625! (Not complaining -- it IS a cool thing for NYC and ESB to do.)

When I was 12 years old I got my first autograph from Gary Carter in Chicago. He walked over to all the kid's and signed autographs for about 10 minutes . He was a class act ! He will be missed ! Hope they find a cure for Brain Cancer soon so no other families have to feel this pain

You know Gary Carter was a special human being--his passing has united virtually an entire Yahoo news Forum--with many thumbs up tribute-posts--well, there will always be 1-2 negative people. But Carter was indeed a class act and a real role model.
