Following a historically good 2013 season, there wasn't much doubt that Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw would win the Cy Young award on Wednesday. The question, rather, was whether Kershaw would win the award unanimously. He would have been the 17th pitcher to do so. Alas, Kershaw received 29 of 30 first-place votes. The other went to Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Who didn't give Kershaw a first-place vote? Baseball Writers' Association of America member Mark Schmetzer from Cincinnati, who writes something called The Reds Report, which doesn't appear to live on the Internet. Schmetzer has written for the Associated Press, ESPN and MLB.com. He's also written two books about the Reds. Here's a bio of Schmetzer that looks to be from 2010.
Obviously, following an NL Central team, Schmetzer got to see Wainwright more than Kershaw this season. But this is interesting: Wainwright got clobbered by the Reds in 2013. His ERA in four starts was 7.77. Kershaw, meanwhile, faced the Reds twice and had a 1.80 ERA.
Here's the beginning of an MLB.com piece Schmetzer wrote Sept. 2 about Wainwright vs. the Reds:
Adam Wainwright's Labor Day start for St. Louis against the Reds was a definite improvement over his most recent effort against Cincinnati. Unfortunately for Wainwright and the Cardinals, that bar was set so low that improvement would have had to be significant to prove beneficial.
Shin-Soo Choo and Joey Votto each hit home runs, Jay Bruce stroked two doubles and the Reds scored six runs over the first four innings against the St. Louis right-hander on their way to a 7-2 win on Monday afternoon at Great American Ball Park.
"Obviously, I'm frustrated," Wainwright said. "This team deserves more out of me, and the last two games, I haven't given them what they deserve."
So did Schmetzer give Wainwright a big ol' pass? Hard to say. Schmetzer hasn't jumped on his Twitter account yet to explain his vote. Know that the even the St. Louis writers and San Francisco writers voted for Kershaw.
Here's something: In 2012, when Kershaw finished second in Cy Young voting, Schmetzer voted him fourth.
