The Cincinnati Reds took a temporary hit to their starting rotation Friday when right-hander Mat Latos had surgery on his left knee. Mark Sheldon of reports that "Latos was injured a couple of days ago when he slipped while throwing." Latos had been progressing, Sheldon said, after he had offseason surgery to remove bone chips from his throwing elbow.

This will set him back 10 days. At that point, Sheldon says, Latos is scheduled to resume throwing. It's not an arm injury, so that's good, but anything that puts a guy behind during spring training has a chance to linger into the regular season. It's, at the least, an irritation. Johnny Cueto, Homer Bailey, Mike Leake and Tony Cingrani round out the Reds' rotation. It's one of the best in the league with Latos and Cueto healthy.

Latos has a 3.35 ERA in 137 career starts with the Reds and Padres since his rookie season 2009. He has struck out between 185 and 189 batters in each of his four full seasons. He went 14-7 with a 3.16 ERA in 2013, allowing only 14 home runs despite pitching in dangerous Great American Ball Park.
