Masahiro Tanaka serves up leadoff home run to Melky Cabrera in MLB debut

Big League Stew

The eyes of the baseball world were fixated on Rogers Centre in Toronto on Friday night as the New York Yankees’ $175 million man, Masahiro Tanaka, made his highly anticipated MLB debut against the division rival Blue Jays. However, if all of those eyes blinked simultaneously, they may have missed his first career milestone.

On only the third pitch of the game, Tanaka allowed his first major league home run to lead-off man and former Yankee Melky Cabrera. The towering drive to right field cut the early Yankees lead to 2-1. Carlos Beltran and Mark Teixeira delivered RBI singles in the top half of the inning to provide some early cushion.

Perhaps most notable for Yankees fans, despite his initial reaction and discontent, Tanaka didn't appear to be immediately rattled by his early mistake. He quickly rebounded to retire the next three hitters, including Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion on strikeouts. However, the Blue Jays would strike for two more runs in the second on three singles and a Teixeira throwing error.

Tanaka settled in, however, the Yahkees' offense struck for five more runs and Tanaka got the first win of his MLB career.
