Manny Ramirez homers on the first pitch he sees in the Dominican League

Big League Stew

So here's a nice little debut. Manny Ramirez — you remember him, right? — made his debut for the Las Aguilas Eagles of the Dominican League on Wednesday night, and rocketed the very first pitch he saw into the cheap seats. He delighted the capacity crowd in his home country; the game sold out quickly after the announcement came down that he'd be playing. He hadn't played in the Dominican League since 1995.

Ramirez hasn't played in the majors since five quick games in Tampa Bay in 2011; he retired quickly after being hit with a 100-game suspension for failing a test for performance-enhancing drugs. As for whether this is a first step back to the majors, he's dodged the question: "I'm not thinking about the big leagues now," the 40-year-old Ramirez said when he first joined the team. "Right now I'm thinking of helping the Eagles to win games and then, if any offer, then I'll think of baseball."
