Manny meets Moneyball, signs deal with A’s

Manny Ramirez signed a one-year deal with Oakland on Monday. (AP)Last week, Billy Beane took a relatively surprising and sizable risk for some offense, committing four years and $36 million to Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

[Jeff Passan: Baseball's top stories in 2012 won't overshadow the game]

On Monday, the Oakland GM made a move that was a little easier to see coming, signing 39-year-old Manny Ramirez to a minor-league deal worth about $500,000.

Ramirez, of course, will have to sit out the season's first 50 games if he makes the big-league team. He'd be eligible to play in his first game on May 29 in Minnesota, one day before his 40th birthday.

The A's signing a value-laden contract with a veteran superstar on the wrong side of his career is nothing new, of course. Frank Thomas, Hideki Matsui, Nomar Garciaparra and Mike Piazza have all logged time at the Coliseum over recent years. Signing Manny may be a risk on a few different levels, but if he's going to produce anywhere and not cause much of a stir it'll be with a team that doesn't receive as much media attention as others.

What's interesting to me, though, is that Ramirez is feeling the baseball jones enough that he's willing to get out of bed for a $500,000 contract. Then again, with guys like Johnny Damon, Vladimir Guerrero and Hideki Matsui still on the market, he really had no choice but to price his services low.

Spring training is here, so don't miss a beat ...

You're a barrel of laughs. 17 at bats? Even Ty Cobb had slumps similar to that.

If Bud Selig doesn't let them move to San Jose soon, they may sign Sammy Sosa next.

"...he's willing to get out of bed for a $500,000 contract". I was unaware that was such a small sum of money...

^^^^ this, 500k is nothing to him considering what he's made in his career and that statement in the article is bang on correct.

Lets see he tests positive for (PED'S) and sits out 50 games in the 09 season, retired last year to avoid a 100 ga,e suspension again for PED'S. Now comes back and if he makes the bigs will have a 50 game suspension. After all these positive PED tests why is he even being allowed to play at all?

By the time he and his dreadlocks and stink rag show up, the A's will have a 20 win season
Not much to look forward to.

Remember when nobody wanted to sign Bonds? Why is Manny different? Not at all a Bonds fan. I am glad no one picked him up. Just curious why teams look at Manny differently.

I doubt bonds would play for $500K
      • msalig 3 months ago
yea well Bonds did not have repeated dirty tests either. Manny is a redneck. He needs the money is why he is doing it. 500 plus homeruns and all the hits, he should not be playing for so little unless he is just desperate.

Nick, from what I recall, he did not get a single offer. Any dollar amount. He was also a strong hitter still.

Why would Oakland sign the guy from LMFAO?

Geez, Billy's a freakin' genius. Next up: John Jaha...I think Billy can find him living in Ted Kaczinski's hut in Montana.

Is Manny still going to have the stupid hair?

I would have much rather seen the A's resign Matsui, or go with Damon or Vlad.

Gotta love Billy Beane... Hey, for the baseball purists keep your eye on the new acquisition of the Seattle Mariners... Jesus Montero... the Yankees traded away the next Mickey Mantle... keep your eye on this kid, he has power to right field like you haven't seen in a long while and hits the ball with authority to all parts of the park. He never had the requisite skills to be a catcher in the bigs, but he has an arm and if they can teach him to play the outfield he will go on to be a big time MLB star.
