Not only did St. Louis Cardinals skipper Mike Matheny give the team a well-deserved day off Thursday at spring training in Jupiter, Fla., but he also cleaned up after everybody the day before. Literally. Even the bathrooms. Scrubbing Matheny does the work — so Lance Lynn doesn't have to!
Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch delivers the details:
Rookie third baseman Patrick Wisdom’s walkoff homer in the sixth and final inning gave the Red team a 7-6 over the Blue team in a Cardinals intrasquad game Wednesday and sent some of the losers to their knees.
Matheny had determined that the players (and manager) on the losing club had to perform the duties normally handled by Rip Rowan’s clubhouse equipment staff.
Matheny, who had no particular team in the fight, assigned himself to clean all the toilets, not only in his office but in all the other shower areas.
“Both teams are my team,” Matheny said. “It’s the right thing to do.”
Matt Holliday was assigned to clean the training room. Trevor Rosenthal was cleaning up in the kitchen area. Several rookies, including Randal Grichuk, who hit two homers, were plowing through the task of cleaning all the players’ shoes.
And Matheny cleans the Little Cardinals Room. It's actually impressive, the kind of thing that reminds the players that Matheny might have authority over them, but he's not "above" them. Jeepers, he cleans the bathroom, he cleans up their embarrassing porn links on Twitter. Is there anything Matheny won't do for his guys?
Does he do windows? No matter; Busch Stadium is open-air.
