Breaking News:

So what line are we going to hear from David Ortiz?

David Ortiz(notes) just hit a three-run homer to give the Red Sox the lead against Oakland — of course he did — and we have to now assume there's no way he'll be able to duck out a back door to avoid talking about today's report that he and Manny made the 2003 steroid list.

So which way will he go? Blame it on his cousin? Deny, deny, deny? Refuse to talk about the past? The "I had no idea what I was putting into my body" route?

My money's on that last one, given that Ortiz is on record as saying he can't say with 100 percent certainty that he never took steroids and can easily play that card if he wants.

Until then, check out this collection of Ortiz steroid-related quotes, as compiled by Off The Record. This one's my favorite:

“They pick me [to be tested for steroids] every time. I don’t know why. I don’t know if it’s because I’m a big guy, or what, but all I know is all they are going to find is a lot of rice and beans.”

PED-laced rice and beans? I suppose it's as plausible an excuse as any. Let's see him use it.

UPDATE: Ortiz went the release-a-statement route and my assumption turned out to be more or less true with Big Papi not knowing what he tested positive for.

Read his full release below:

DAVID ORTIZ "Today I was informed by a reporter that I was on the 2003 list of MLB players to test positive for performance-enhancing substances. This happened right before our game, and the news blindsided me. I said I had no comment because I wanted to get to the bottom of this.

"I want to talk about this situation and I will as soon as I have more answers. In the meantime I want to let you know how I am approaching this situation. One, I have already contacted the Players Association to confirm if this report is true. I have just been told that the report is true. Based on the way I have lived my life, I am surprised to learn I tested positive. Two, I will find out what I tested positive for. And, three, based on whatever I learn, I will share this information with my club and the public. You know me — I will not hide and I will not make excuses.

"I want to thank my family, the Red Sox, my teammates, and the fans for their patience and support."
