Order in the bleachers! Proving that no one is immune from the siren call of a summer afternoon at the ballpark, Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor hit Yankee Stadium for the Yankees' 12-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.
But lest you think the high-ranking judge spent all of her time feasting on champagne and lobster in the ballpark's section in front of the moat, Sotomayor actually began her day the right way. Which is to say out in the bleachers with Bald Vinny and his Bleacher Creature crew. (Don't worry, the Supreme Court is not currently hearing any cases.)
Usually seen on the Supreme Court bench next to Stephen Breyer, (Sotomayor) sat next to "Bald Vinny" Milano in a section where tickets cost $20 and $23.
"The first thing I said to her was, 'I'm probably going to be the loudest guy you meet today, but I'm absolutely speechless,'" Milano said. "I don't think she knew before she got here what she was in for."
The Yankees said Sotomayor moved to better seats after Roll Call.
It's pretty cool to see Sotomayor rubbing shoulders out there with the Bleacher Creatures, though by no means surprising. As we wrote at the time of her appointment in 2009, Sotomayor grew up in the Bronx and counts herself a fan of the Yankees. She even owns a unique spot in the sport's history, issuing an injunction as a federal judge in 1995 that sided with striking players and forced both sides back to the bargaining table (where an agreement would eventually be reached).
Sotomayor attended a Yankees game at Nationals Park back in June, but she likely agrees that there's nothing like watching a game at your home park. Here's hoping she had a great time.
