Gather 'round, because it's time to recap the most recent diamond doings. Roll Call starts at Safeco Field, where the Seattle Mariners really wanted to win one for the freshly retired Ken Griffey Jr.(notes) And win they did, thanks in large part to another blown call by an umpire. Aw, c'mon, blues.

Game of the Day
Mariners 2, Twins 1
(10 inn.)

Jim Joyce's mistake blighted a perfect game and stained his own legacy. But at least it didn't cost anyone a victory. The same cannot be said for Dale Scott's miss of what should have been an inning-ending force play at second base.

Instead, Scott called Josh Wilson(notes) safe at second after Matt Tolbert's(notes) terrific dive and flip on Ichiro Suzuki's(notes) grounder.

And by the time J.J. Hardy(notes) threw the ball home (actually to "cut-off man" Jose Mijares(notes)) a streaking Ryan Langerhans(notes) had stepped on home for the winning run.

It was a fun moment for Seattle in a season where joy has been muted by disappointing results. Meanwhile, Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire felt ripped off.

"The replay shows he's out, bottom line," Gardenhire said tersely. "We don't need to talk about that any more. It's all out there. Just go watch the replays of it."

OK, let's watch the replay. (He was out.)

Ichiro, giddy as a school child, jumped into the arms of coach Lee Tinsley and dedicated the win to Junior. It was Seattle's first victory in its last at-bat since Griffey won a game May 20 with a single.

"Today was a special day. We all wanted to win for Junior and I'm glad I got to accomplish that," Suzuki said through a translator. "That was a natural reaction ... I guess I could say that was my true feelings toward Junior."

So ...

• Awesome stop by "Is that you?" Tolbert.
• Smart hustle by Langerhans, who scored from second base.
• Effective coaching by Mike Brumley, who waved him all of the way.

• Hilariously unnecessary cut off by Mijares.

But the ump's call's the thing. Expand replay. Help the umpires. Make the game better.
