Joe Maddon spoofs famous Mike Gundy rant in new Rays ad

Once upon time — already six years ago to be exact — Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy unleashed one of the most famous rants in sports history.

You know the one we’re talking about: “I’m a man! I’m 40!”

It was a classic, unforgettable three minutes of well spoken and high pitched disdain over an article in a local newspaper that Gundy didn‘t appreciate. To this day, that particular sound byte and other little sound bytes from Gundy's rant are still replayed and referenced whether the timing seems appropriate or just random. There’s really no bad time to relive it, and that was proven once again on Saturday when the Tampa Bay Rays released a new Flex Pack ad spoofing the infamous rant.

Of course, to pull this off the Rays had to call on their own fearless leader to do the ranting. Enter Joe Maddon, who's a man conveniently celebrating his 60th birthday on Saturday.

Go get'em, Joe.

There are only a select few managers in baseball's history who could pull off the original rant as well as Gundy did. Earl Weaver, Tommy Lasorda, Lou Piniella and Jim Leyland are a few that come to mind immediately. Maddon can be fiery too when he needs to be, but his mostly calm and cerebral approach to baseball makes him the ideal candidate to spoof it. It also doesn't hurt that he has pretty good comedic timing.

Bottom line, Joe Maddon is a real gem. Just like the commercial.
