Jesse Chavez saves his own life by catching screaming line drive at head

Big League Stew

Jesse Chavez of the Oakland Athletics performed a near-miracle in the fourth inning Tuesday night. He somehow caught a metaphoric rocket off the bat of Seattle's Michael Saunders, a line drive coming right for his head, the force and shock of which knocked Chavez to the ground.

That was his skull. He would have been so wasted.

Saunders came in hot at the plate, but went 0 for 4 with one particularly loud out to the pitcher. Instead of having MRIs and trying on caps padded with Kevlar, Chavez can continue having a breakthrough season, despite the Mariners beating the A's 8-3, the first time an opponent has won a Chavez start in 2014. Chavez allowed four earned runs over 5 2/3 innings.

Overall, he has been a revelation for the A's (not to get too biblical), coming in with a 1.89 ERA, second in the league, after six starts. At 30 years old, he's finally having success in the majors after several stops of mediocrity and worse.

More takeaways from Chavez's amazing catch:

• The sound the ball makes when he catches it. Gloves don't usually make that pronounced of a SNAP!

• Chavez's head was actually turned to the side when ball meets leather. If he saw the ball at the end, it was peripherally.

• The sight of Chavez, a little shaken, letting out a sigh and walking off the mound with tobacco still in his cheek. That he didn't swallow it also was lucky.

• Gah! Security! Oh, that's just catcher Derek Norris.
