Grambling State loses 30-0 to Central Arkansas

From the world of college baseball comes a real doozy of a boxscore.

On Tuesday night, the Central Arkansas Bears defeated the Grambling State Tigers in one of the more lopsided games you'll see at the high school level or higher. The final score: 30-0 — and a quick study of said boxscore will leave your jaw on the floor as you digest some of the numbers posted by the Bears offense... or allowed by the Tigers.

As the home team, Central Arkansas had to do their damage in eight innings. That wasn't a problem, as they plated at least one in each frame and as many as six in three different innings. They did it by collecting 27 hits of their own, but were also aided by 12 walks, four hit batsmen and six errors (resulting in 13 unearned runs).

You know, it's almost a miracle they didn't score 40.

When all was said and done, Central Arkansas sent 72 men to the plate. That averages out to exactly nine hitters per innings. It also means only one-third of their hitters were retired successfully.

Ouch.

Of course a 30-spot on the scoreboard also means one player must have had a historic performance at the plate. That would be starting catcher Michael Marietta, who would finish 7-for-7 with a school record tying three home runs AND three doubles, to go along with a new record 11 RBI. He also scored six times — a conference record — and totaled 20 bases when you include the walk he drew, which is just flat unfathomable.

On the other side of the ball, their pitching staff also had a nice game as seven pitchers combined for the shutout. They only allowed seven hits and, perhaps most importantly, didn't walk a single batter.

The win pushed Central Arkansas to 24-8 on the season. Obviously they have a solid team. Grambling State fell to 13-18, which isn't great but shows they aren't exactly the Washington Generals out there. A really bad day at the office combined with a really good one for the opposition just puts them on the wrong side of history.
