The first round of the MLB Home Run Derby had a number of unimpressive moments: Two homers were enough to advance for Todd Frazier in the National League. Defending champion Yoenis Cespedes only managed three homers. Yasiel Puig was shut out.
The man who didn't disappoint (in the first round, at least) was Giancarlo Stanton, the Miami Marlins slugger appearing in his first Home Run Derby. We've come to expect tape-measure, jaw-dropping homers from Stanton and he delivered that in the first round. Gawk at his first-round, upper-deck blast that almost left Target Field entirely and was projected to travel 510 feet.
Here's the reaction from players:
As it turned out, this was Stanton's best highlight of the night. He went homerless in the NL semifinals, losing to Todd Fraizer. Stanton only needed two homers to advance, but didn't hit a single one.
In the case of Giancarlo Stanton, that's harder to believe than a 510-foot blast.
