Yankees at Rays, 7:10
H. Noesi (2-1, 4.14) vs. J. Shields (15-12, 2.84)
The Rays will begin this one by asking Joe Girardi asking why the heck he couldn't have used A-Rod, Derek Jeter, Russell Martin or Andruw Jones as a pinch-hitter for Austin Romine during Sunday night's loss to the Red Sox, then they'll get to trying to reduce the one-game deficit that separates them from the Red Sox. The pitching in this series couldn't work out any better for the Rays. They'll throw James Shields, Jeremy Hellickson and David Price while the Yankees have elected to rest CC Sabathia for the remainder of the regular season.
Red Sox at Orioles, 7:05 ET
J. Beckett (13-6, 2.70) vs. T. Hunter (4-4, 4.86)
The first child for Josh Beckett and his wife was due to arrive a few days ago, but Baby Beckett is apparently already a huge Red Sox fan and doesn't want to mess with the team's only reliable starter at this point. The little one staying put (for now) means that daddy gets to make tonight's start before heading home for an induced labor before the playoffs. (Assuming the Red Sox make the playoffs, that is.)
According to Adam Jones' frustrated tweets, this is a big one in Baltimore after the Orioles took three of four games from the Red Sox last week in Fenway Park.
Phillies at Braves, 7:10
C. Lee (16-8 2.38) vs. R. Delgado (1-1, 2.70)
Atlanta has lost five of its last seven and the news doesn't get any better. They'll be throwing a rookie making his seventh big league start against Cy Young candidate Cliff Lee as the Phils shoot to become the first National League team to win 100 games since the 2005 St. Louis Cardinals. (Given the circumstances, I'm sure Cardinals fans won't mind giving up the designation.) Lee last faced the Braves on Sept. 5, throwing a five-hitter in a 9-0 win at the start of Atlanta's September slump.
Cardinals at Astros, 8:05
J. Garcia (13-7, 3.45) vs. W. Rodriguez (11-11, 3.51)
Brad Lidge is not walking through that door, but Albert Pujols and the Cards have to feel pretty confident about their trip to Minute Maid Park. The Astros are the worst team in baseball, have lost eight of 12 games to St. Louis this season and will face a pitcher (Garcia) who has a 1.69 ERA over his last four starts.
Rangers at Angels, 10:05
C.J. Wilson (16-7, 2.97) vs. D. Haren (16-9, 3.16)
An Angels loss or a Red Sox win tonight reduces this series' significance to Texas' bid for homefield advantage, but as they say: It ain't over 'til it's over.
