Current Commissioner Bud Selig will receive the first Commissioner Bud Selig Leadership Award.

The Baseball Assistance Team created the award and is giving Selig the honor of being its first recipient Tuesday night at a banquet in New York City. B.A.T. is an charitable organization within Major League Baseball that helps those within "the baseball family" who have fallen on hard times — for example a retired player — and provides discreet aid. Randy Winn, who played for the Tampa Bay Rays, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners others over 13 seasons in the majors, is the organization's president.

In a statement made in December, Winn said Selig — who is entering his final season on the job — has meant as much to B.A.T. as anyone since he has been in charge:

"We are proud to bestow this honor upon Commissioner Selig to recognize baseball front office executives who support our organization in a meaningful way. Over the years, we have received a substantial amount of assistance from individuals and groups throughout our industry, including players, clubs, executives, club and league employees, and fans, but none more so than from the Commissioner's Office. We are very grateful for the Commissioner's leadership and all of the support we have received in his tenure to allow us to continue our mission of assisting members of the Baseball Family who are in need of help and have nowhere else to turn."

So it's a good cause and Selig sounds like a worthy recipient. It is funny, though, getting an award named for yourself. As Grant Bisbee of SB Nation points out: You know how many Cy Young Awards that Cy Young won? None!

Up next, The Montgomery Burns Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence. Word is, Burns is the favorite.
