Chipper Jones laughs at picture that shows he’s ‘fat’

This is the "fat" picture that Chipper Jones has been hearing about. (AP)It's one of the dirty rites of spring. An unsuspecting ballplayer is photographed in less than flattering clothing that makes him look a bit puffy. Said photograph then zooms around the Internet and is discussed, dissected and derided by people who likely get winded just by breathlessly talking about it.

It's all very ludicrous, of course, but the lucky winner of this year's "is he fat?" derby was Atlanta Braves star Chipper Jones, who had this misleading picture to the right snapped of him on Sunday in the team's spring training camp. An Atlanta TV station raised a few eyebrows and asked if Chipper had been packing on the pounds, as did bloggers, tweeters and even a few of Chipper's teammates.

We never got into the act here at Big League Stew because 1) if that's fat, I'm Jabba the Hut  and 2) other pictures taken on the same day show that wind was responsible for the semi-unflattering look around his midsection.

[Related: Atlanta Braves have done little to improve in competitive NL East]

But with Jones acknowledging the talk on Thursday — and even having a little bit of fun with it, despite experiencing an "epic sunburn" — it seems like we should note his reaction.

    From the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

"Thing is, I'm seven pounds lighter than I've ever been in camp, and now I'm fat," Jones said. "I weigh 226, 227. Usually I'm 235."

That didn't stop Brian McCann and other Braves from razzing him after Jones returned Thursday from two days of fishing. He hadn't heard about the photo until he got back.

"(McCann is) so happy now," Jones said, "because [at Turner Field] every time that little kid from 'Sandlot' comes on [the video board] before we start the game — 'play ball!' — I say 'Hey, Mac!' That little chubby kid."

Jones will turn 40 years old on April 24, so it shouldn't be surprising that he's not able to model a gray sleeveless t-shirt — which are rarely flattering to anyone — like he's LaRon Landry.

But take a look at this picture of Chipper that was snapped one day later.

We should all look so terrible at age 39.

baseball players tend to be more out of shape than other sports players. but he's not fat, that's clearly just an unflattering picture.

You're right, baseball players are the least athletic of the major sports. Most of them couldn't pass a high school PE fitness test
      • Centurion Babb 2 months ago
Your both wrong.. baseball players are in better shape then most athletes, know your facts before you make stupid comments...
      • DuMmY 2 months ago
They're not in better shape than "most" athletes! Prince Fielder, CC Sabathia, Carlos Lee, Carlos Zambrano, David Ortiz, all the Molina's... need I go on? I'm sure most athletes in other sports can outrun them and would do better on fitness tests (even linemen in the NFL for that matter). They're good at what they do and I LOVE baseball but maybe it is you who should stop making stupid comments.

I think it was two years ago when McCann hit a triple and kind of fell into third base when attempting to slide. Camera pans to Chipper in the dugout and he's holding on to the railing cracking up. Loved that moment. Chipper's the last of a dying breed, a superstar who will spend his whole career with one team. Once Jeter, Rivera, Ichiro, and Jones retire, we may not see that for a good long while, excepting maybe Pedroia with the Red Sox.

You are so right Joe, but also remember, a lot of teams do not want to keep their players that long either. It is a two way street that is getting more and more difficult to reach.

Amen Joe, I won't go to the extreme of saying I miss the days before free-agency, but it is sad that baseball is becoming increasingly a sport of rockstars with little to no care about their team. Players seem to covet the MVP more than the WS these days.

I really hope Kemp and Kershaw can be that in LA. It would be a sad day if either of them left.

If that's considered fat in America, then we're doing better than I thought.
    • Debra  •  Dallas, Texas  •  2 months ago
Really? Do fans care if someone looks a bit chubby in a picture or do they care about stats? If they really have to run a story about chubby ball players they only have to start with Babe Ruth. Yes, he's from the past but he's a text book example it's about the stats, not the look.

Can't we find something else to write a story about? Even if that was a fat roll, WHO CARES!!!
