My best guess: The Phillies completed a three-game sweep against Atlanta Braves. And it was a strangulation as much as a sweep.
Check out the vibe Lidge gives off:
• Extreme vein/tendon distention in neck — check
• Death metal fist pump — check
• Gritted teeth showing to gum line — check
• Crazed Manson eyes — check
• Pending division championship — check
Behind No. 3 Ace Roy Oswalt(notes), middle man Ryan Madson(notes) and Lidge, the Phillies tossed a combined one-hitter to win their 10th straight, beating the Braves 1-0 to move six games in front with nine to play. The Phillies are 18-3 this month.
"I think the faster we get it done, the better off we'll be," manager Charlie Manuel said.
Any combination of Phillies victories and Braves losses equaling four will hand Philly its fourth straight NL East title. They might have to change the name of the division to the NL Pheast.
Hey, can we see Lidge's jugular? Even if the Braves had gone for it, Lidge would have bitten off their hands at the wrist. That's a heckuva parting gift for Braves manager Bobby Cox. Here ya' go, skip: A good look at the contents of Brad Lidge's neck.
Cox can console himself here: The Braves still lead the wild card race by a half-game.
