According to this tweet from the team itself, there are four basic kinds of Oakland Athletics permitted:
• Those who grow spectacular Afro hairdos
• Those who maintain handlebar mustaches
• Those who wear enormous horn-rim glasses
• Those who lean like a corpse
Or, presumably, some combination therein. Those guidelines await left-hander Eric O'Flaherty, who signed with the A's on Wednesday for two years and $7 million. He's coming off Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery, so he won't be able to pitch until July.
O'Flaherty, who turns 29 in July, became one of the better lefty relievers in the league with the Braves in recent seasons. His numbers against lefty batters — 114 strikeouts and a .531 OPS in 542 plate appearances — are particularly dominant. Overall, he's compiled a 2.85 ERA in 319 1/3 innings.
But questions remain about what kind of personal affectations O'Flaherty will bring to the A's clubhouse. Big hair like Coco Crisp? Big glasses like Erik Sogard? Big 'stache like Rollie Fingers? Or will he just kind of lean and flop around? A's pitchers report to camp in Arizona in three weeks.
