Orbit, the Houston Astros mascot, thought it would be funny if (s)he went fishing for trout — as in AL MVP candidate Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels. So, with the Angels doing sprints at Minute Maid Park before they played the Houston Astros on Tuesday night, Orbit donned a hat and vest, and grabbed a fishing pole and tried to hook Trout to the end of his/her line.
You just knew this was going to end up with a fishing lure hooked into Orbit's furry cranium. But, in leading up to that, the Angels did a great job in playing along, especially Trout and Erick Aybar — who encouraged the mascot/superstar interaction. Perhaps most surprising: The tacit approval of noted curmudgeon Albert Pujols, who smiled and even appeared to laugh. A Machine? Bah!
Of course, not only does Trout swipe the rod and reel, he eventually goes fishing for mascot and hooks Orbit.
Have we mentioned that the Astros have had a rough season? They fired their manager earlier this week. They've come under fire for certain organizational practices. But they don't need to fire up Orbit, who's doing swell.
Amanda Rykoff has a recap of the Trout-Orbit encounter over at Astros' Mission Control.
