Drew Pomeranz had been another of those diamonds in the rough the Oakland Athletics bring in, shine up and let the rest of us marvel at.

Going into his Monday night start against the Texas Rangers, Pomeranz had a 1.90 ERA through 17 appearances, eight as a starter. He joined the A's in December, Oakland's return in the Brett Anderson trade. Pomeranz, a first-round pick in 2010, was showing signs of that first-round talent since being added to the rotation in May.

Then, Monday night, things went really wrong. Pomeranz gave up seven earned runs in 3 2/3 innings in Oakland's 14-8 loss, making his ERA jump up to 2.91. That's not the worst part, though. Pomeranz fractured his hand in a fit of rage afterward.

He's posted a 1.56 ERA in Triple-A this season, which sounds promising, if not for the 7.76 ERA over 10 MLB starts in four seasons. But, hey, these are the A's. Maybe they'll find treasure again.

As for Pomeranz, now he knows why a big-league clubhouse has something like this:
