A fan dashed onto the field during Thursday night's Los Angeles Angels-Kansas City Royals game and made quite a scene before security caught up with him. He ran to the pitcher's mound, where he slid and grabbed the rosin bag, avoiding a would-be captor.

The slide-grab-and-turn was a lot like the climax in the movie "The Sandlot," when Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez slid to retrieve the Babe Ruth-signed baseball, evading Hercules the Dog and setting off a huge chase scene.

In this case, the fan was chased all right. But he was caught pretty quickly. Looks pretty proud of himself, huh?

You know you're on the road when you go barreling into the stands to make a great catch, get up, climb back on the field and a fan throws a beer at you. Right, Nate McLouth?

The Baltimore Orioles left fielder risked injury Thursday night falling into the stands at the Rogers Centre in Toronto — home to some of baseball's most raucous fans. Perhaps upset that McLouth made the catch or perhaps just seizing an opportunity to look like an idiot, a fan then tossed a beer at McLouth. It didn't hit him, but it definitely caught his attention.

There's a contingent of Jays fans who maintain that McLouth dropped the ball when he went into the stands but pretended like he caught it, thus deserving the beer drenching. Regardless, it was ruled a catch on the field.

"No class whatsoever," Orioles TV commentator Jim Palmer quipped after the beer toss.

This is more like what this year's Los Angeles Angels were expecting.

Thursday night the Angels won their fifth in a row, downing the Kansas City Royals 5-4 thanks to home runs from Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, Mark Trumbo and Chris Ianetta. The win pulled the Angels even with the Seattle Mariners for third place in the AL West and gave roughed-up pitcher Joe Blanton his first win of the season in nine starts.

The Angels are now 20-27 and the highest they've been in the standings since April 27. It's not proof that everything is right in Anaheim, but it's a promising sign that things are getting better.

The most impressive moment for the Angels came early: Trout's first inning home run traveled 463 feet, the longest of his career, the third longest this week and 11th longest of the season, according to Home Run Tracker.

Brandon Inge arrived in the Pittsburgh Pirates clubhouse on Thursday on roller blades, wearing a Mario Lemieux jersey, a hockey helmet and big, thick pads on his legs.

No, he didn't wake up with sports amnesia and think he was a hockey player. He decided to dress like one to support the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are currently playing in the NHL Playoffs and hope to, on Friday, close out a best-of-seven series with the Ottawa Senators. The Penguins — led on the ice these days by Sidney Crosby rather than Lemieux, who is the owner — are ahead of the Senators 3-1.

The Pirates beat the Cubs 4-2 on Thursday and had planned to wear Penguins jerseys when they traveled to Milwaukee after the game. Inge, apparently, wanted to take things a bit further.

He explained himself to USA Today:

In 1989, baseball scout Epy Guerrero was profiled in People magazine. Yep, the same People magazine that does the "Sexiest Man Alive" lists and keeps the world up to date on Angelina Jolie. That should tell you that Epy Guerrero wasn't just any ol' baseball scout. People's 1,900-word feature story sums him up perfectly in the third paragraph:

They say now that Epifanio "Epy" Guerrero has "the eyes"—that he can see the future major leaguer in a young ballplayer the way the visionary poet claimed to see a world in a grain of sand.

Guerrero, whose claim to baseball immortality was opening a baseball pipeline to the Dominican Republic, died Thursday at age 71. He opened the Dominican Republic's first baseball academy in 1973 and worked as a scout for the Houston Astros, New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays. In Toronto, specifically, he was revered for bringing the Jays stars such as Tony Fernandez, Carlos Delgado and George Bell.

It is believed, according to Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle, that Guerrero signed more amateur players who reached the majors than any other scout. Among them: Cesar Cedeño, Kelvim Escobar, Alcides Escobar, Alfredo Griffin, José Mesa and José Uribe.

Steve McCatty could use the excuse "I was young; I needed the money" in trying to explain why he posed in swim trunks for the July 1984 edition of 'Playgirl' magazine. He was 31 years old and just a season away from his last pitch in the majors because of injury, so branching out into male modeling wouldn't have been a bad idea. (Especially with that blond mustache of his. Very Larry Bird.)

No matter why, he did the spread — many other major leaguers throughout the '80s did similar photo shoots — and the nearly sexy results are what you see, and what remains on the internet. Too bad for McCatty, the pitching coach of the Washington Nationals today, his players know quite well how to navigate the World Wide Web.

One of them struck beefcake gold in a wonderful post by Michael Clair at Baseball Prospectus, and everyone knew what had to happen next. Right-hander Dan Haren ordered shirts made, reporter Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post said. Obviously, it's been the talk of the Nationals clubhouse. Via the Washington Times:

Scouts and prospect watchers will tell you he's special because of his dancing mid-90s fastball and his baffling changeup. Other people will tell you he's special because of his superstitions.

Gausman, 22, is perhaps best known for his doughnut fetish. In college at LSU, he developed a routine of eating small powdered doughnuts during games. He'd eat one mini doughnut before his first pitch, and four between each inning. So if he threw, say, a complete game, that would be 33 mini doughnuts. (Aroldis Chapman approves of this pastry-pounding).

Orioles star Adam Jones even gave Gausman 1,700 mini doughnuts in February, which is 425 innings worth — and 97,750 total calories.
