On the freewheeling Russian teams of yore, the Owen Sound Attack's Damir Sharipzyanov probably would have been a perfect fit. This is a different time and thus the 18-year-old offensive defenceman was left off his country's entry at the world junior last month (plus Russia was also so deep defensively than potential top-10 NHL pick Ivan Provorov barely played).

Nevertheless, on Saturday night Sharipzyanov, who hails from the same region of his country as former NHL first overall choice Nail Yakupov, showed some sweet skills by stickhandling away, around and through four Kingston Frontenacs defenders to score a beauty goal for the Attack.

When it comes to the OHL goal of the year, we're going to need a bigger canon, just between Max Domi and Sharipzyanov's efforts this weekend.

That tally was one of two that Sharipzyanov scored to during a first-star effort in the Attack's 5-2 win over the Frontenacs. The native of Nizhnekamsk has had something of a breakout season during his second year in the OHL, with 25 points over 40 games from the blueline. A 6-foot-2, 203-pound defenceman who can manoeuvre well in the open ice is a rare quality in junior hockey. Sharipzyanov has one more chance to be part of Team Russia at the 2016 world junior.
