Considering that Gabe Grunwald plays for a team who shares a name with a college basketball powerhouse and that his father is a NBA executive, well, he's perfectly suited to hitting nothing but net as he joined the ranks of goal-scoring goalies.
Grunwald, 19, has had quite the odyssey to establish himself in hockey, moving from the Toronto area, to New York state, to Alaska and Michigan in search of places of hone his game. On Saturday night, the future member of the Wisconsin Badgers became the first Ontario Junior Hockey League netminder to score a goal and record a shutout in the same game, as he wrapped up a 3-0 a 3-0 win over the Mississauga Chargers. After hitting the net with a clearing attempt from behind his own goal line, Grunwald, just like a skater would, took the traditional lap by the bench to high-five his teammates, which makes it ever more awesome.
Here is the exclusive video from FASThockey.com:
Grunwald is a great story unto himself. Being the son of Glen Grunwald, the general manager of the New York Knicks, who have the same parent company as the NHL's New York Rangers, surely has opened some doors for him in sports. His training partners include top prospects such as Malcolm Subban, Canada's likely starting goalie for the world junior championship, and Philadelphia Flyers second-round choice Anthony Stolarz. However, a goalie can either stop the puck consistently or he cannot. Gabe Grunwald is in the top 10 in the OJHL with a 2.54 goals-against average, plus he's got the prototype goalie build at 6-foot-3, so don't bet against him. He is expected to sign a letter of intent with Wisconsin next week.
Suffice to say, the Portland Winterhawks' Seth Jones is much more hyped but is not the only teenaged hockey player with a NBA tie to keep up on. Gabe Grunwald started playing hockey when his father was GM of the Toronto Raptors. Joining Wisconsin means he's following his dad's path to Big Ten country; Glen Grunwald played for Bobby Knight at Indiana, which doesn't have a hockey team.
