Brayden Point part of a Moose Jaw miracle: Sunday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Brayden Point, Moose Jaw Warriors (OHL)

What was that? The Warriors salved their disappointment over being mathematically eliminated one night earlier by scoring five unanswered goals to win 5-4 and snap the Saskatoon Blades' 18-game win streak.

Point (2G-2A, +2) had two goals and an assist in a span of just more than 5½ minutes in the third period when the Warriors treated a crowd the local Times-Herald described as "the 1,200-or-so fans that braved the blizzard" to a treat by tying the game. The 16-year-old Calgarian, who turned heads when he joined Moose Jaw for their playoff run last spring, deked out a defenceman to set up Jordan Messier for the 4-2 goal 6:55 into the third period. Point, who has 51 points in 61 games as a rookie on a team which does not score much, then potted a rebound goal to shave the Blades' lead to one. Then he tied the game, going down 1-on-1 and wiring a shot between the legs of Colorado Avalanche-drafted defenceman Duncan Siemens and by two-time Russia world junior goalie Andrey Makarov.

Point wrapped up the night with an assist on Tanner Eberle's overtime winner.

No. 2 star: JC Lipon, Kamloops Blazers (WHL)

Like the land of Libya, the Blazers' week was one of contrasts since they lost to last-place Vancouver but completed by with a 3-0 win over Kelowna, whom they still harbour hope of overtaking for the B.C. Division crown. Lipon (3G, +2), the undrafted 19-year-old right wing who played for Team Canada at the world junior, scored all three goals. The Regina native and his linemates Brendan Ranford (2A, +2) and Cole Ully (2A, +2) produced two goals in the first 10 minutes to put Kelowna in catch-up mode. (Rockets scoring leader Myles Bell also left with an injury.) It allowed flowed from there for the Blazers, with Lipon scoring 1:48 into the third to get his hat trick and his jersey number goal, with 34 on the year.

Kelowna is three points ahead of Kamloops and has a game in hand. The teams have a home-and-home series next weekend.

No. 3 star: Max Domi, London Knights (OHL)

Not having injured Boston Bruins prospect Seth Griffith on his line was once again no problem for Mighty Max. Domi (2G-2A, +1) and Chicago Blackhawks selection Alex Broadhurst (2G-1A, +1) led London to a 6-1 blowout of the Kitchener Rangers. The pair have been on a tear, which continued from the moment Domi scored a deflating power-play goal early in the second period. With 39 goals and 82 points, the potential NHL first-rounder is now among the top 10 scorers in the OHL.

Honourable mention: Tyler Bertuzzi, Guelph Storm (OHL)

Bertuzzi redeemed himself after beginning the Storm's Northern Ontario road trip by getting ejected for checking to the head in Sault Ste. Marie. The sophomore wing seized on a rare interconference visit to his (and uncle Todd Bertuzzi's) hometown, scoring two third-period goals that sealed Guelph's 5-2 win and its perfect four-point weekend.

Oddly enough, Bertuzzi (2G, +1) was left out of the three stars honours at Sudbury Community Arena. Rookie centre Robby Fabbri (3A, +2), who set up his insurance markers with 9:22 and 4:57 to go, was first star in the building. Evidently, Bertuzzi's grating style of play doesn't curry favour in any visiting arena, even one in his old stamping ground.

Also odd: Bertuzzi has had four two-goal games this season, and three one-goal games.

Potent notables — Medicine Hat's Curtis Valk (1G-2A, +2) scored his 42nd in the Tigers' 5-2 win over Calgary. The game was delayed two hours by poor winter driving conditions in Southern Alberta ... In the OHL, 17-year-old Justin Nichols made 29 saves for his first shutout as Sault Ste. Marie beat Peterborough 4-0, leaving the Petes four points out of the playoffs with five games left and Kingston and Missisauga each having at least one game in hand ... Colorado Avalanche pick Mitchell Heard (2G, +2) led Plymouth to a 5-0 win at Mississauga ... Philadelphia Flyers first-rounder Scott Laughton (3A, +3) helped Oshawa hold off Kingston 4-2 ... In the QMJHL, 17-year-old Russian Valentin Zykov had two goals in Baie-Comeau's win at Shawinigan, giving him 39 in his rookie season.
