You always want a first win to be memorable, whether it's for an individual player or a team. Still, one Texas team seems to have taken that altruism to a new level.
It took more than a year, but Lake Ridge finally won a game, doing it with flair in triple overtime — Facebook
As noted by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and a handful of other Dallas-area news outlets, Mansfield (Texas) Lake Ridge High edged Burleson (Texas) Centennial High in a triple overtime thriller on Friday night, eventually escaping with a 77-75 victory. The win was the first in school history for Lake Ridge, which opened in 2012 and proceeded to suffer through an 0-10 inaugural football campaign.
MaxPreps reported that Lake Ridge scored just 48 points in the entirety of its futile 2012 season, a total which it surpassed by the end of regulation (55 points) in its first ever victory.
The star in the win was Lake Ridge quarterback Jett Duffey, who passed for five touchdowns, four of them to Jalyn Hernandez.
If there was ever a first half that could foreshadow such a wild conclusion it may have been the one that the two teams completed on Friday night, with the squads combining for 73 points and 627 yards. In fact, together the teams averaged 9.1 yards per play in the opening stanza.
Clearly, that's a sign that there is still room for improvement for Lake Ridge's defense. Luckily, it appears that the Eagles' offense has fully clicked into gear and is ready for more action in the days to come as well.
