Roger Clemens' son's Texas playoff game starts after midnight

With storms wreaking havoc on fields throughout Texas last week, two coaches decided to let a high school game start after midnight on Saturday. It turned out about as ugly as one might expect.

The game officially started at 12:43 a.m. By 4:33 a.m., the scoresheet tallied 22 runs, four errors, 20 walks, two hit batters, and nine pitching changes. Memorial (Spring Branch, Texas) took home the 14-8 win, advancing to the next round of the state playoffs. The winning coach told a local blog that it was  "one of the sloppiest playoff games I have seen in a while.”

One of the Memorial players was Kody Clemens, son of former Major League Baseball pitcher Roger Clemens. The all-star shortstop is the youngest of Roger's four sons. He'll play at the University of Texas next year, where his dad pitched two All-American seasons.

The game was played at a USA Baseball facility because Memorial and Taylor (Katy, Texas) High's fields were both too wet to host the game. They originally scheduled a 10:45p.m. start at another high school, but an earlier game there ended up being delayed by another storm. That meant they'd start after midnight, so the Memorial coach called the USA Baseball facility. The USA Baseball facility offered the teams a 10:30 p.m. start, but that, too, was delayed when an earlier game went into extra innings. The earlier game finally ended at 12:10 a.m.

“In hindsight, we should have waited until later Saturday to play," Memorial coach Jeremy York told the blog Texas High School Baseball. "But we were already there – players, coaches, parents and fans.  And who would have thought that it would have taken nearly 4 hours to play the game?”

By the end, even the coaches were regretting the decision. The parents must have regretted it, too, though pictures show the stands were packed. No word on whether the Rocket was there, but he's been spotted at plenty of Kody's games earlier this year, according to MaxPreps.
