Texas player returns missed FG for longest TD in recorded history, by definition

Prep Rally

Officially, Sean Landez may never own the all-levels record for distance traveled on a return for a touchdown. Unofficially, his return of a missed field goal on Friday night will be impossible to top. Ever.

As noted by Deadspin and reported by (the RGV stands for Rio Grande Valley), Mission (Texas) Sharyland High special teams ace Sean Landez returned a Mission (Texas) Edinburg North High 44-yard field goal miss 109.9 yards for a touchdown during Sharyland's 48-7 rout of Edinburg North. In truth, the return you see above may have been even longer than that, as Landez pulled in the ball with only his tiptoes inbounds just in front of the back edge of the end zone.

Once he had the ball, Landez turned on the jets, accelerating upfield on the right side and using a phalanx of Sharyland blockers to spring the longest return anyone has ever seen outside of a Canadian Football League game.

"Just trying to make a play," Landez told "My team was there to block all the guys."

Landez is right: His teammates were there to block all the onrushing Edinburg North would-be tacklers. Still, it takes a special kind of gumption to bring a ball out of the end zone when you barely caught it in bounds in the first place.

As it turns out, there's a good reason why Landez felt comfortable trying to make a play with a massive return: He'd already done it once, on the game's first play. Landez returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown after receiving a lateral from teammate Estefan Castillo.

Between the two special teams TDs, Landez officially did enough to win the game by himself with the defense that Sharyland put up. Given the fact that he's only a sophomore, it's likely this won't be the last time we see Landez producing some magical special teams heroics, either.

Even if he does, he'll never outdo that return. After all, statistically he can't.
