Rival coach arranges for military mom to live stream her daughter’s 1,000th career point

Attending a new school for her senior girls' basketball season, Alexandria (Va.) Edison High star Jessica Harris -- the daughter of a military mom deployed overseas -- was on the verge of scoring her 1,000th career point without the deserved fan affair that normally accompanies what remains as the gold standard of high school hoops success.

Thankfully, a rival coach ensured Harris' achievement received the proper recognition.

Upon receiving a Facebook message from Harris' mother, U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Christina Simpson, requesting to purchase a t-shirt from her daughter's season-opening tip-off classic, host Fairfax (Va.) Paul VI High coach Scott Allen had a reason for denying the unique request from Afghanistan, where Simpson has been stationed since August.

"I told her, 'First of all, you are not paying for a t-shirt,'" Allen told WUSA-TV (h/t USA TODAY). "Then I said, 'Edison plays at 3 o'clock today. Would you be able to watch, because we're gonna stream the game live?'"

So, Harris' mother did watch via Ustream on a nine-hour delay from her post in Afghanistan, and her daughter responded with her 1,000th career point. Very cool.

"I knew in the back of my mind I know my mom's watching," Harris told the TV station.

Harris, who has received interest from Division I programs, then got to chat with her mother via phone from the stands afterwards -- a gesture also planned by the rival coach.
