As reported by the Newark Star-Ledger’s NJ.com, as well as a handful of other sources, Cuneo set the record on Friday during her team’s face-off against East High (Cherry Hill, N.J.), which ended as an 11-0 Eastern rout. Cuneo scored three goals against Cherry Hill East and now owns 193 total goals over the course of her career, two more than recently graduated Florence High (Florence, N.J.) star Lexi Smith, who set the prior career mark in 2012.
The Eastern win was briefly halted after Cuneo set the record in the first half, with her teammates rushing onto the field with balloons that spelled out 192. She was given a brief moment to reflect and take in her accomplishment, which the teen said finally set in when she got a glimpse of her parents.
"It felt like chills going down your bones. It was the same feeling as somebody scratching their nails against a chalkboard," Cuneo told NJ.com. "It was kind of a crazy feeling and then at the same time, you have a wave of all your teammates and then coach [Danyle] Heilig came out. When I ran over to my parents, it hit me that it was there and it was in the moment. It was awesome."
What’s even more awesome is just how many goals Cuneo could still rack up in her career. Keep in mind that the new record holder is only a junior, so she has another full season and the remainder of the 2013 campaign to keep pushing her career mark farther and farther away from other challengers.
For the moment, Cuneo is set on helping her squad for the remainder of her junior campaign, sounding a note of relief that she and her teammates no longer have to worry about when she might hit the magical 192 goal mark.
"We can just play the rest of the season without having to worry that it's coming up. So now it's just about moving through the rest of the season."
