One-legged prep soccer player is subject of awesome mini documentary
The one-legged soccer player who became an internet sensation upon scoring a goal for Concord-Carlisle (Mass.) High two years ago is now the subject of a spectacular mini documentary that aired at New York City's Kicking + Screening Soccer Film Festival on Thursday night.
The film follows Nico Calabria's sports journey since being born without a right leg and will be used as part of a Coca-Cola Company advertising campaign during the 2014 World Cup, according to Mashable.
"I've always been part of a family that's athletic, and had an older brother who was very athletic, so I was just trying fit it and didn't think I was doing anything abnormal," Calabria told the website. "But over the years I just kind of continually surprised myself with the level I was able to compete at."
Calabria was the first person ever to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro on crutches at age 13, raising more than $100,000 for the Free Wheelchair Mission, and then became an overnight viral sensation when he scored a highlight-reel goal for Concord-Carlisle as a high school junior. The video now has 1.7 million views.
Calabria is currently a member of the U.S. National Amputee Soccer Team and will participate in the Amputee Football World Cup later this year. According to Mashable, he took a year off of upon graduating high school in 2013 to coach gymnastics and intern for the company that makes his crutches (SideStix). He will reportedly attend Colorado College in the fall and hopes to practice with the soccer team.
