Minnesota teen belts first 3 home runs of his life in 3 innings, sets state record
In all his years of baseball — from Little League games as a youth to his current travel and prep competition — Lakeville (Minn.) North High junior shortstop Angelo Altavilla had never hit a home run. Then, over the weekend, he erupted for three in the span of three innings, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Must be something in the water there in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. "Before the game I was feeling it in the batting cages," Altavilla told the paper. "I was excited to get up to bat. The ball looked like a beach ball."
Prior to this weekend, it was the 6-foot, 170-pound shortstop's glove and not his bat that warranted collegiate interest. He's already committed to the University of Nebraska, but his phone might ringing off the hook after his three-homer performance in a 15-0 victory against rival Apple Valley Eastview.
These weren't just any home runs, either. Altavilla belted a three-run dinger in the first inning and consecutive grand slams in the second and third, according to the Star Tribune. A fifth-inning RBI single gave him a state record 12 RBI before the mercy rule cut his shot at more short by two innings.
Hopefully, he remembers what he had for breakfast on Saturday.
