Everything was going swimmingly for Hayward (Wisc.) High girls basketball team. The Hurricanes shocked many by knocking off River Falls (Wisc.) High with relative ease, 36-25, and were seconds away from a berth in the WIAA sectional playoffs, leading Rice Lake by three points with less than five seconds remaining in the Div. 2 regional final.
That's when what you see from the 1:35 point in the video below changed the trajectory of both teams' seasons, ending one altogether.
The point guard who hit that halfcourt buzzer beater is Rice Lake sophomore star Jenna Orr, who not only had amazing accuracy from half court, but also happens to have terrific form in her shot celebrations, as well.
From there, the game was practically over. With momentum heavily on the side of Rice Lake -- buzzer-beating midcourt shots will do that, after all -- the Hurricanes never mounted another serious charge, eventually falling 51-40 and bowing out of the playoffs at the regional final level.
Rice Lake, meanwhile, moved on to the face Sparta in the sectional round, just one victory away from a berth in the prestigious state tournament. If only those final seconds had ticked off again, Hayward might have done things differently. At the very least, the game's results provides a compelling case for fouling an opponent when holding a three-point lead with just seconds remaining, doesn't it?
