Hockey star facing assault charge after concussing own teammate in practice fight

Lots of things go on inappropriate or unbecoming things can occur when high school team practices get a little heated, and intra-squad fights are certainly not rare. Sometimes they even seem to be tautly encouraged by coaching staffs who want to get more passion from their struggling teams.

The next time a player gets upset and starts to go after a teammate during a team scrimmage, they might want to remember Tyler Grimshaw, a 17-year-old Greece (N.Y.) Athena High hockey star who has been charged with third-degree assault after a fight between the teen and a 14-year-old teammate left Grimshaw's opponent with a concussion.

As reported by Rochester NBC affiliate WHEC and Rochester ABC affiliate WHAM among other outlets, Grimshaw finds himself facing an assault charge for the beat down he put on his unnamed teammate in the two teenagers' on-ice squabble. The 17-year-old was informed of the charges against him on Monday, leading to speculation but no formal announcement about what kind of punishment Grimshaw will have to serve.

While the Greece Central School District has refused to be drawn about where Grimshaw will go next, the teen intimated to friends on Twitter that he feels he will be not be allowed back at Greece Athena High, as you can tell from the following two Tweets:

    @djspitale34 @fcarne12 I love you boys I'm gonna miss Athena #heartbroken

@djspitale34 na man guess I'm done senior year was gonna be sick to man hasn't sank in yet #wanttocry

The teen also unintentionally started a brief hashtag movement to overturn his punishments, with #FREEGRIMSHAW drawing a number of mentions from other Greece Athena students on Twitter.

To Prep Rally's memory, there is no clear precedent for how to punish a player who seriously injured his or her own teammate during a practice. To that end, one Greece (N.Y.) Thunder hockey parent said he thought the incident was a simple case of a disagreement going a bit too far beyond the realms of clubhouse etiquette, seeming to question whether the fight was really worth of an assault while simultaneously expressing concern for the victim.

"You know, having played sports in high school, we've been in locker rooms...things go on," Kevin Crowe, whose son plays on Grimshaw's Thunder team, told WHAM. "You don't want to hear about kids being injured."

Of course, in this case one of Grimshaw's teammates was injured, which is precisely what has brought the teen and his team a sense of notoriety that they might have never imaged would befall even in recent weeks.

Shame on you people sitting behind a computer screen judging someone who you have never met before. Don't always believe what you read folks cuz this article for the most part is largely incorrect about the circumstances of the "altercation" or as many of you who jumped to the conclusion that this kid "beat up" the other. Not the case.

i went to school with tyler last year. This is NORMAL for him to do. i literally prayed everyday i wouldn't do anything to upset him. He made me feel unsafe at school because of his anger. When my teacher tried to change his seat, he threatened to bring a gun to school. so, the conclusion that a fourteen year old got beaten up by the 17 year old with anger issues, is not a stretch.

fighting is not allowed in high school or college hockey games and is severely punished...
      coaches in this case
have definitely taught the wrong culture..
taking care of your business in hockey CAN make a dominated player try to compensate for his lesser skill, but we are not trying to teach our kids how to be instigators i hope.

Who wrote this article? A 14 year old? There is only one person to blame if the 14 year old was out matched and injured because of the fight; the coach.

A 17 year old beating up a 14 year old teammate. I would say that 17 year old is a brain dead coward. So much for youth sports and comradery between teammates.

Again, maybe everyone should get the facts straight before passing judgement.

I would guess that mostly all the people who responded never played hockey or even put on a pair of skates, I played on teams in HS where most of the 14 year olds were tough as nails playing varsity hockey, the game is played differently than all sports because of the speed and aggression and it elevates emotion, thats why it is such a great game.

I played my whole life. If you haven't put on a pair of skates and taken a hit you don't have a clue about the unwritten rules of the game. This was an accident plain and simple. I have been knocked out from a check, I knocked someone out from a check and I have been a locker room brawl between two high school teams that was the toughest fight i have ever been in. No where to run, you fight or get your butt kicked. I can't imagine there being a lawsuit from any of that and there shouldn't be in this case.

Serves him right. First of all-- he's 17 and the other kid was only 14! THAT was his first mistake and secondly does he feel more like a MAN because he beat down a 14 year old?? What an IDIOT!

Hockey is the only sport were this thugery is accepted(with exception of a few)as normal behavior. When it happens in amy other sport it's deemed as animalistic on behalf of the participants and not the way the game was intended to be played. Oh, Nascar gets a pass also.

enjoy watching the games from the stands you douche.

When I initially read the headline I thought it was crazy and the beat-up kid needed to toughen up. Then I saw that it was a 17yr. old beating up a 14yr. old. Although it is a small age difference, the gap in development is huge. It's almost akin to a man beating up a child. A 17yr. old should never let himself get into a fight with a kid like that, even if provoked. Don't forget, 17yr. olds are charged as adults in most states.

Actually its the coach that deserves to get his #$%$ kicked.

at first, I thought pressing charges against a hockey teammate was overkill...then I found out it was a senior vs a freshman. what a douche. lock that fool away

the age doesn't matter... they are on the ice at the same time... i've seen a 19 yr old fight a man #$%$ near 40. The fact that the cops are involved is absolutely ridiculous. Probably some uptight parent... Part of hockey is hitting, fighting and beating on your opponent for an hour, then being able to shake hands like men when the game is over.

17 year old can be considered an adult unde rthe law, a 14 year old is a kid, the bully should do time. I got jumped outside a rough Chicago west side high school by two 18 year olds when I was 14, I'd like to meet up with the 2 losers now

so by this logic they should arrest the next person who checks a guy off the puck right? There were at least two fights a week on my high school team and boxing in the locker room. Not a single charge ever pressed, called team building and settling differences. If you want to pussyfoot around go play soccer

I said it before. I'll say it again. NHL is retarded. If you want to fight, join a boxing club. Otherwise play the hockey.
    • Mike  •  Bethel Park, Pennsylvania  •  3 months ago
I have played hockey since ive been 4 years old, i bet what happened is what we call helmet boxing, two players put on their helmets which have cages on and use their gloves as boxing gloves. We use to do it after every practice its proving who's tougher. The younger guy probably was getting picked on and stepped up and challenged him. Were not being told the whole story. The kid may of gotten hurt but assault? Really?

Hockey breeds bullies. If they are mean enough, they make it to the NHL. And earn millions of dollars. Some system!
