Girls team hopes to win section, dance at prom in one day
Fellow attendees of the Del Oro (Calif.) High junior prom will have to forgive Madeline Campbell and four other girls if they arrive at the school's annual junior prom a little late, and a little sweaty. It was either that, or the stars of the Golden Eagles would have had to forfeit their place in the CIF Northern California Regional Division II championship game.
According to the Sacramento Bee's Joe Davidson, Campbell and four of her fellow senior teammates are all invited to the junior prom, and all plan on attending. The only problem is that they have a 2 p.m. tip off against St. Mary's (Calif.) School in Sacramento, a game which won't end until 4 at the earliest, and will be followed by the requisite trophy presentations and a team ride back to Del Oro High, which will take a minimum of 30-40 minutes.
That's when the seniors will have to speed home to change and move on from one American tradition to the next, trading in high tops for high heels.
Then again, if time is too tight, Campbell said she and her crew of teammates and best friends might forgo the dresses they bought for the event in favor of a less traditional prom outfit.
"We're going to crash the party in our uniforms," Campbell told the Bee. "We're the best of friends and we play like it."
If they keep playing the way they have in the playoffs, the Eagles may have quite a lot to celebrate come Saturday night. Del Oro romped to a 68-37 postseason opening victory against Chico (Calif.) High, then proved it could hold on to win a close one in its second playoff game, edging out San Jose (Calif.) Presentation High, 63-59, in overtime.
With one more victory, the team would provide an elusive Northern California title for longtime Del Oro coach Mike Takayama. Come Saturday, the only thing they might want to do more than that is dance at the end of the night.
"I'm not ready to leave Del Oro yet," Campbell told the Bee. "We still want to do more."
Just think: the senior might be able to cross two seminal moments off the list of things she still wants to do in one day.
