Crazy long-distance buzzer-beater puts Illinois team in title game

Rockridge High School junior Carson Frakes and his teammates will never forget Friday night.

Down by a point to Hales Franciscan in the state tournament semifinals with 5.1 seconds remaining, the Rockets inbounded the ball and had to go the length of the court to score the game-winner. But one of Frakes’ teammates fell down while trying to push the ball up the court against pressure. he somehow found Frakes with a pass while on his backside.

Frakes grabbed the ball and heaved it toward the basket from beyond half court  in one fluid motion and sank the shot giving his team a 45-43 victory.

Replays show it couldn't have been closer in terms of whether the ball left Frakes’ hands before the clock expires and lights come on around the backboard. It's certainly something Hales Franciscan players and fans will question whenever the story is told in the future.  Frakes scored 17 points with 12 rebounds in the game.

The Rockets will play in the Class 2A state championship on Saturday night against  St. Joseph-Ogden. No matter what happens in the title game, Rockridge players, coaches and fans will fun memory to last a life lifetime.
