Cheerleading coach removed after calling team ‘highfalutin heifers’

Of all the things a high school cheerleading coach should do, calling her charges "highfalutin heifers" isn't one of them. In fact, the world can now rest assured that precisely such a claim can get a cheerleading coach taken away from the team she is supposed to lead.

As first reported by Houston TV network KPRC (and brought to Prep Rally's attention by the folks at Larry Brown Sports), the Cypress Woods (Texas) High cheerleading coach is no longer in charge of the program after a recording emerged on which she called her team "highfalutin heifers."

"Who do you think you all are?" the coach said in the recording. "Highfalutin heifers. You can just come and go as you please. Fire me!"

The "heifers" line was part of a much longer screed the coach made against her team, with the cheerleader who recorded the rant claiming it was just one of a number of aggressive rants the coach had launched against the team. Her name has not been released because she is not facing any criminal charges in the rant, even if it might be concerning that she would deem it appropriate to compare impressionable young women to female cattle.

Meanwhile, the cheerleader who provided the recording -- who is identified only as the 11th-grade daughter of a man named Abel Olivares -- has been handed two days of detention for recording the coach's rant on school property and sharing the recording with friends.

While the student's father was upset that his daughter was disciplined, he maintained that any penalty she would pay would be a small price for the timely removal of the coach in question.

"They're supposed to be there to learn, feel safe, feel that the teacher is going to have a high standard, just like they're expected to do," Abel Olivares told KPRC. "If nothing else, that audio protects another kid from being yelled at or verbally abused, then you did a good thing."

I teach high school and it is a career I would recommend to anyone. Teachers are attacked from all sides, and mandates come down from the government, administration, the courts etc. I like my job, I really do; but most kids today want something for nothing, often insolent, incorrigible and irresponsible.
      • SB 3 months ago
and you'd still recommend the job to anyone? gee thanks.

I know you got into that profession because of the money and high regard....right? ;) All kidding aside...thank you for teaching our children.
      • Dan 3 months ago
I agree with you. I'm doing my student teaching right now and I love working with my students. Some of them are irresponsible little brats but most of them are good kids.

not that I agree with the coach's tactics but try listening to a boys' hs sports team coach sometime. this is mild, to say the least..

Anything can get you fired nowsaday. This coach meant good for the girls. And if the girls can't survive her criticisms now, they will not succeed in life.

When I was in high school a teacher told me I was only good for 2 things: Good for nothing and good for a bad example. All of the other kids laughed and that was the end of it. If I would have gone home and complained my parents would have thumped me. How times have changed.

Ha, ha, ha!! I'm glad you didn't take it to heart.

When my kids, now all adults, came home complaining about a teacher I would simply ask "and what did you do?" Complaining stopped or the excuses were really lame.

"If it saves one more girl from being yelled at..."
Dude, if your not raising your kid with thick enough skin to take a verbal rant from a cheer coach, daddy's little girl is going to have a helluva time in the real world...The wussification of America continues.
      • truthful 3 months ago
Yeah...ok...there is such a thing as mutual respect though, lest we forget.

@ Truthful, "mutual respect?" Have you ever dealt with teenagers?

What a stupid story. The coach is probably tired of getting ran over by the kids... I had far worse rants IN MARCHING BAND..... Geesh
    • AZ Dad  •  Phoenix, Arizona  •  3 months ago
Sounds to me like these kids think they can say and do whatever they want and the coach had enough of it. Dad said he told her to record the coach due to previous verbal abuses. Of course he only had one side of the story. Wonder how the girls were acting and possibly disrespecting the coach to push her to this point of yelling?

When these girls get into the work force, they're the ones that will run whining to HR every time someone looks at them wrong. And the Chinese will continue to kick our butts because we can't get anything done right.

Highfalutin Heifers? Oh the humanity................. give her a medal, she's probably right on the money.
    • ting_jr  •  3 months ago
REALLY?!?!? It sounds to me like the father and daughter both need to put their "big girl" panties on and realize the world isn't all sunshine and lollipops.

Teachers should be able to start recording thier classes or sessions to catch students in the act.

Give me a break! If being called a heifer hurts these prima dona princesses sensibilties then they are in for a rude awakening when they hit the real world. I hope the coach sues the principal, the district and this goof who told his spoiled brat daughter to record anything for defamation of character. If there is any justice left in Texas, she'll win and be able to retire so she doesn't have to put up with this sort of nonsense! Disgusting.

The coach did nothing wrong. I coached High School Basketball for years. It sounds like they do what they want not what she tells them to do. She said what do you think you are "highfalutin heifers" ,she did not call them that. Another example of the news saying what they want. Capt. Bob
