The entire incident might be a candidate for quickest flip flop in reaction to public outlash in recent history. Just hours after the tale of youth football player Julian Connerton's touching tribute to his mother hit national airwaves, the entire reason why it became a sensation evaporated: the decision to ban Connerton from playing with pink gloves was unilaterally overturned by his youth football coach.

As reported by the Press of Atlantic City, the Egg Harbor City, N.J., 12-year-old returned to the Egg Harbor City Crusaders seventh and eighth-grade football team on Wednesday, taking part in the team's annual photo and officially signing back up for the rest of the season.

Unlike Saturday, when Connerton famously walked away from the program because he was told he couldn't wear pink gloves to honor his mother's ongoing battle against breast cancer, the seventh-grader was specifically told he could wear the pink gloves for the remainder of the season when he returned.

In fact, Connerton's coach, 26-year-old Paul Burgan, said the entire incident was a simple misunderstanding that was caused by the coach's own forgetfulness; Burgan said that if he had remembered why Connerton wanted to wear the pink gloves, he never would have opposed them.

"He did something 100 percent right. He stood up for his mother. That's what you want every kid to do," Burgan told the Press. "In the end you don't want to hurt any one of the kids' feelings. At the time I didn't know I hurt his feelings. I feel bad. You don't want this to happen to anyone's mother."

Connerton said shortly after the Tuesday evening meeting that he was relieved that the incident was over and was excited to return to the football field and put all the attention and controversy behind him.

One of the nation's most prominent prep basketball coaches was ousted on Monday after long running allegations of "undue influence" as a method of convincing players to transfer to his school finally convinced school officials he couldn't continue with the program.

As reported by Online Sports Guys and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, among other outlets, Alpharetta (Ga.) Milton High basketball coach David Boyd, who led the program to state titles in 2010 and 2012, was removed as the program's head coach, while the school's principal, Clifford Jones, simultaneously self reported "undue influence" violations to the Georgia High School Association.

Stripped of any jargon, Boyd essentially is being accused of recruiting other high school players, a strict no-no on a national level in competitions. It's certainly illegal at public schools like Milton.

There's no questioning the statistical heft behind Boyd's career achievements in the state of Georgia. The coach has an incredible 604 career victories in 32 years as a head coach in the Peach state, including state titles at four different schools.

Of all his stops, Boyd may not have made a bigger impression than at Milton. His 2010 championship squad was loaded with top recruits, and his 2012 team feature plenty of potential college players as well.

The issue was simply that far too many of those players may have come to Milton specifically to play basketball, and done so after being asked by Boyd. Online Sports Guys noted three different players who competed for Milton in 2012 after leaving teams in other Georgia cities. Two other additions were even more egregious, arriving at the school after parachuting in from other states.

For his part, Boyd has denied any wrongdoing, instead claiming all he was trying to do was help athletes from traditionally rougher backgrounds.

"If helping players, some of whom may be coming from the other side of the tracks, if helping those players be successful, do well in school, become good citizens, earn scholarships, play in a winning program; if that's undue influence, then guilty as charged," Boyd told WSBTV's Mike Petchenik.

Football may be a team game, but occasionally one player is so dominant that he single-handedly takes control of a game. Rarely has that been more true than in Oregon, where McMinnville (Ore.) High senior Spencer Payne put up the game of his life against Hermiston (Ore.) High.

The game's final score showed a 59-44 victory for McMinnville, but it didn't reflect just how dominant a game Payne had put up. Traditionally a starter at running back and defensive back, Payne accounted for six touchdowns, and did so in four different ways: Rushing, receiving, passing and returning an interception.

Even more impressively, Payne racked up almost all of those points in a single half. According to the Yamhill Valley News Register, Payne scored five of his touchdowns in the first half and barely got on the field after intermission.

"[Payne is] Definitely dynamic," McMinnville football coach Don Rutschman said of his senior superstar. "He can cut on a dime. He's healthy right now. I think this also says maybe our line is improving a little bit.

"For tonight, he did a very good job, and when you think about it, in all honesty, other than kickoff returns he played one series in the second half."

As noted by the Hermiston Herald, Payne scored three touchdowns running the ball, caught one for a TD, threw for another and added his interception return for a score in the first half. The senior standout's stats were as unique as one might imagine for such a prolific performance, too.

• 1 pass for 34 yards, 1 touchdown

• 1 interception return for 30 yards, 1 touchdown

Put it all together, and that's more than 200 yards of total offense and another 30 in the return column. Payne also served as the team's primary return man for punts and kickoffs, and added 75 return yards to his impressive single-game dossier.

A returning All-State pick and the 2011 Pacific Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Payne's firepower is well known around the state, particularly among frequent foes like Hermiston. Clearly, knowing that Payne can cause damage isn't enough to keep him from doing so, as Hemiston found out in first person in its second game of the season.

A Washington high school entered the school year excited about a promising football program. Now, one week into the season, Puyallup (Wash.) Chief Leschi High is wondering if it will even be able to field a team after an astounding 20 of its players were deemed ineligible because of academic struggles or a lack of practice time.

Making matters worse, the school's coach only learned of his players' ineligibility shortly before his team's season opener, leaving it little choice but to forfeit. Officially it was a 2-0 loss.

The ineligibilities left Chief Leschi with only 11 eligible players, and state rules wouldn't allow a team to compete in a full game with such small numbers.

"It is a horrible thing," Chief Leschi coach Sauni Savini told the Tacoma News Tribune. "You never want to give up a game like that to anybody — they planned for the game, and we planned for it and for some reason, our kids … it's one of those things we have to build better character, build better commitment."

It's incredible that Chief Leschi could have come across this predicament, considering the fact that it started preseason training with a full 31-player squad.

For his part, Sauni promised the News Tribune that his squad would have enough players to field a team come the team's home opener on Sept. 21. In an incredibly lucky scheduling twist, the school has a scheduled bye week on Friday, spotting the program an entire additional week of practice time to hit the minimal requirements for players to be certified to compete.

Fountain Valley (Calif.) Los Amigos High needed some help. The school's baseball program, fresh of a first playoff run in the school's 30-year history, had its equipment room raided and cleaned out by a crew of thieves. Needless to say, with ongoing budget shortfalls what they are, there was little chance Los Amigos could afford to replace all the equipment that was stolen itself.

That's when the community stepped in, donating all kinds of funds and items to the program. That, in turn, helped grab the attention of Major League Baseball, which decided to just take care of most of the rest itself.

As reported by the Orange County Register and a variety of other Los Angeles outlets, MLB stepped forward to donate $4,000 to the Southern California school after hearing of the theft which rocked the baseball program. MLB's donation followed an aggregate $3,000 which was raised by a combination of other organizations, principally the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Diamond Sports, a sports equipment company.

In a unique twist, all the funding that has flooded the school in an effort to keep the team afloat for the fall ball season may actually put Los Amigos in even better equipment than it had previously. According to Los Angeles CBS affiliate KTLA, the school estimated that it had approximately $4,000 of used equipment stolen from its locker room on September 3.

Considering the fact that it has since gained $7,000 in donations -- with more money possible at a forthcoming bbq lunch -- Los Amigos could end up with substantially more money, and better equipment, than it started with.

On Monday, Prep Rally introduced you to one heck of a grab from an Austrian teenager, earning the catch of the week while temporarily taking that completely mythical and highly subjective title overseas. If defensive players could earn catch of the week, however, young Nikolaus Rabitch would have had some serious company.

The play you see above, sent Prep Rally's way by the Play On network, came during a South Carolina faceoff between powerhouse programs Irmo (S.C.) High and Greenwood (S.C.) High. On an early Irmo drive, the Yellow Jackets ran a designed trick play, with a wide receiver in the flat letting fly with a deep pass.

Greenwood defensive back Kaleb Chalmers read the play from the outset and dropped deep to provide extra coverage. Then, as the ball floated downfield, Chalmers somehow morphed into Superman, leaping in the air and pulling down an interception almost reminiscent of a Calvin Johnson-style reception.

Ladies and gentlemen, you won't see many interceptions more impressively athletic than that.

In late June, a youth hockey coach in Canada was arrested for the rather despicable act of apparently tripping an opposing player in a postgame handshake line. Now, months later, the British Columbia resident has been charged with two counts of assault.

According to the CBC, the coach in question, George Tremblay, will appear in court for the first time later in September, at which point a future trial schedule for the former coach will be set.

The assault charges come as the result of complaints from two youngsters who faced off against the UBC Hornets' 12-and-under squad that Tremblay was coaching. Both of the formal complaints against the coach came from the players who were allegedly tripped, likely filed with the help of their parents.

It's worth reminding that those alleged victims are both 13 or younger, with the main target of the trip a notable 13-year-old playing in the league's 12-and-under division, a move which was perfectly legal because the athlete was 12 when the season began.

Of course, none of those factors could ever excuse Tremblay's alleged actions. The then-coach was immediately suspended after the allegations against him surfaced, not to mention video of the handshake line incident.

Jenni Goethe didn't set out to be a hero when she decided to try out for a spot on the Tecumseh (Okla.) High football team. No matter. It took precisely one game for the precocious 15-year-old to emerge as a veritable local legend.

With a powerfully clean 22-yard boot in overtime, Goethe gave her Tecumseh team a 16-13 season opening victory against Noble (Okla.) High, one of her school's biggest rivals. Goethe was carried off the field, and shortly afterward was feted by everyone from teammates to the local media en masse.

There was good reason for that sudden enthusiasm. Just three days before the season opener, Tecumseh didn't have a kicker. According to the Tulsa World, Goethe, a soccer standout, was asked by the school's football coach, Greg George, if she had ever considered trying to kick a football. That night, Goethe went out to the field with friends on the football team and began drilling kicks with the consistency of Adam Viniatieri.

The next morning Goethe tried out for George and the coaching staff and eventually nailed kicks from as far back as 35 and 40 yards. They immediately fitted her out for a helmet and shoulder pads and had her kick for a live pass rush at the team's walk through practice the next day.

In a sign of good things to come, she drilled all her rehearsal kicks regardless of pressure.

Cue the game against Noble and a third quarter point-after touchdown attempt. The blocking scheme for Goethe broke down, leaving the kicker exposed to an oncoming pass rush. Her attempt was blocked, and she was "smeared" by Noble defenders.

That hit, it turns out, may have been a mistake.

"It just made me mad," Goethe told the Globe's John Hoover. "But it didn't hurt."

That toughness plays into precisely why the team's veteran members rallied behind their new kicker from the day she walked into the team's huddles.

"She competes," Tecumseh senior co-captain Jordan Colvin told the Globe. "She's no different than any one of us. She's got long hair. That's the only difference. She wants it just as bad as we do."
