"The Big Chill" made a big splash over the weekend, packing some 113,000 fans into the Big House for a college hockey game, making it the largest crowd to ever see a game outdoors. Yet that game couldn't have gone off as smoothly if the Michigan Stadium ice hadn't had a test run from some eager high school squads nearly a week before.

According to AnnArbor.com and the Heritage Newspapers of Southern Michigan, Michigan Stadium officials and a group of high school hockey teams got together to stage a quartet of high school games on the temporary Michigan Stadium ice surface six days before Michigan and Michigan State faced off, serving as a way of testing the ice while also helping forge a connection between the massive collegiate event with the local hockey community.

As one might expect, the event was a huge hit with the lucky teens who got to be the first to test drive the 2010 edition of the Michigan Stadium icescape.

"It was really cool," Huron (Mich.) High's Kyle Aaronson told

Word to the wise: Never dress up as an opponent's mascot at a pep rally on the morning of a heated football game. That innocuous mistake cost Bakersfield (Calif.) High student body president Mitch Carter his general safety and facial integrity.

According to BakersfieldNow.com, Carter, a senior at the school, agreed to don a chicken suit for his school's pep rally on Friday before the school's matchup against Clovis West (Calif.) High in the Valley Conference championship game. The idea was for Carter to impersonate Clovis West's golden eagle mascot, but before the student body president even got to the midcourt circle for a skit with Bakersfield's mascot, he was attacked by a group of junior varsity football players who rushed out of the crowd to wrestle with the giant chicken.

"Some students got a little too excited about the appearance of a mascot for the other team, and one student tackled the mascot and then others piled on," John Teves, public information officer for the Kern

Running back Fred Taylor is a Florida legend. The former Gators star wasn't just an influential running back on the college level in Gainesville, he also remains one of the most beloved players in Jacksonville Jaguars history after a long tenure anchoring the offense of the north Florida team. Even though Taylor now plays his football in New England, the legendary running back is having an impact on the Sunshine State's gridirons, with his son, Kelvin Taylor, picking up where he left off as a Florida prep phenom.

The second Taylor's imprint on Florida football was stamped firmly last weekend, when running back Kelvin Taylor put together a record-setting day at the perfect time, running for 254 yards and five touchdowns on a state championship game-record 44 carries. As reported in the Orlando Sentinel, Taylor's efforts almost singlehandedly led his Glades Day (Fla.) High team to the title in a tight, 42-35 victory against Warner Christian (Fla.) High.

There are losing streaks, and then there are epic slumps. For four years, the Cross Keys (Ga.) High girls basketball program was in one of the latter, failing to win a single game across an entire tenure of a high school class.

That all came to a crashing end last month, when the Lady Lions finally snapped a 96-game losing skid with a 31-28 victory over Yeshiva School of Atlanta. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the win was the program's first under second-year coach Bobetta Bailey and the first since a 48-30 win over Carver (Ga.) High in late January of 2006.

The win was most special for Taylor Luxford and Tosin Adebayo, a pair of seniors who had yet to win a single game in their high school careers. The duo combined for 12 of their team's 31 points in the rare victory, with the Indians led by sophomore Asha Buchanan's 10 points, according to PrepCountry.com.

Quarterback Brendan Nosovitch didn't just have a good game in Allentown Central Catholic (Pa.) High's 49-27 demolition of Archbishop Wood (Pa.) High in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AAA semifinals on Friday. He had a career game, one that was so impressive that it might be better than just about anyone's career game, too.

According to the Philadelphia Daily News and the Allentown Morning Call, Nosovitch finished with an astounding 602 yards of total offense (or 601, depending on which account you believe) in ACC's victory, passing for 419 yards and four touchdowns and running for two himself, while gaining 183 yards on 21 carries.

In fact, the stirring statistics accounted for a rare feat: The quarterback actually out-gained his own team. While Nosovitch accounted for 602 yards, the Vikings as a whole were credited with only 599 yards, meaning that the team actually lost yards when Nosovitch wasn't involved.

"I'd definitely say it was the game of my life,"

Jessica Korda is only 17, but she had a heck of a weekend. Not only did the teenager lead at the LPGA's Q-school professional qualifying tournament, she finished in the impressive runners-up position, qualifying for the full LPGA professional tour in the process.

"It was a tough, tough day because it was really windy, and I lost my balance about 20 times," Korda told the Associated Press. "But this is a dream come true."

"I knew I always wanted to turn pro, but I never thought I'd do it this year. I've had a really good year and I'm so glad I get to finish it out here, turning pro at LPGA Q-school."

A Floridian teen of Czech descent -- her father is legendary Czech tennis star Petr Korda, who actually caddied for her over the summer at the U.S. Women's Amateur -- Korda could be the latest great youth sensation to hit women's professional golf, following on the heels of current women's golf stars Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel.

There have been plenty of amazing, acrobatic touchdowns across the nation this year. Yet a playoff game in California still might have turned in a 2010 first: A complete somersault en route to a game-winning end-zone celebration.

As reported in the Orange County Register, the player who pulled off the feat you see above is Garden Grove (Calif.) High running back Josh Webb, who took his airborne leap a bit farther than usual in the final two minutes of the Argos' CIF-SS Southern Section Final victory over Beckman (Calif.) High. Just before Webb hit the goal line, he went up to get above the last line of Beckman's defense. Webb made it, but not before being forced to take his acrobatic aerial act to a new level, completing a full somersault before landing on his back, pulling Garden Grove to within a point of the Patriots, at 30-29.
