A Virginia teen who appeared ticketed for collegiate athletic success was found dead after drowning while swimming with friends over Memorial Day weekend.

As reported by The Virginia Gazette and Eastern North Carolina CBS affiliate WNCT, 18-year-old Trevor Times disappeared while trying to swim to a sandbar some 75 yards from where he and his friends were in James City Virginia's College Creek on Monday afternoon. Onlookers reported that the Jamestown (Va.) High senior began to struggle and then eventually went under the tide, after which he was not seen again.

According to North Carolina Fox affiliate WAVY, Times' body was pulled from the creek on Tuesday morning.

WNCT claimed that College Creek is a popular swimming destination, but also brings significant risks because of constant strong rip tides and particularly deep water, a threat borne out by the sheer number of victims the creek has claimed; Times' presumed death will be at least the third fatality in the past 15 years at the location.

The senior's passing robs Times of what all assumed was a bright future. The teenager was scheduled to graduate within the next three weeks, and signed an athletic scholarship to play golf at East Carolina University.

A California pitcher finished his team's last regular-season home game with 20 strikeouts … and was only kept from a shot at a complete-strikeout game because he was removed with one out remaining.

The budding star in question is a junior hurler for Upland (Calif.) Western Christian School, a relatively small parochial school in the Los Angeles area with a burgeoning baseball program. Right-hander Ryan Olson is the newest name in the school's arsenal of strong pitching, with his final home outing of the regular season — a 6-0 victory against Murietta (Calif.) Calvary Murrieta School -- proof of his dominance.

As first noted by the Los Angeles Times, Olson completely dominated the Calvary Murrieta hitters, striking out 20 batters in 6 2/3 innings to post one of the most impressive displays in Southern California this spring. Considering the fact that Westlake (Calif.) Harvard-Westlake aces Lucas Giolito (who missed most of the spring with an elbow injury) and Max Fried are both expected to be selected early in the forthcoming MLB entry draft, that's quite a statement.

Yet, Olson's dominance wasn't enough to earn him a complete game, for what many might consider a rather noble reason: He was removed to make way for a senior pitcher because the home finale also served as Western Christian's senior day.

There's no debating that having a senior finish off a senior day game is a classy move, but whether or not Olson should have been pulled in the middle of such a dominant performance is a legitimate question. It's not often that a pitcher hits 20 strikeouts in nine innings (just ask Roger Clemens and Kerry Wood) let alone in seven. There's a very realistic prospect that Olson will never have another 20-strikeout game, let alone have a chance at recording number 21 with one out remaining in the game.

Just when you thought "Tebowing" had gone the way of the Macarena, the fad of imitating the Jets QB's post touchdown pose had a major week, with Snoop Dogg throwing down a Tebow following a first pitch and the national media capturing upon the story of a Florida teenager who had his diploma withheld for Tebowing in front of the school's principal on stage.

Now the would-be messiah of the fad, Tim Tebow himself, has come out in support of the student who was disciplined for following his on-field lead.

As first reported by the New York Daily News, Tebow spoke up for Fort Myers (Fla.) Bishop Verot High senior Chuck Shriner, who was disciplined by his own mother, a math teacher at Bishop Verot, after he Tebowed on stage during his commencement.

"I don't think his diploma should be withheld," Tebow told the Daily News. "I think it was probably something a lot of people laughed at. I don't know that it was necessarily appropriate, but I definitely think he should be able to graduate."

Of course, Shriner was, in fact, allowed to graduate. The penalty for Shriner's offense was a simple two-day delay in the receipt of his diploma and a penalty of gym cleaning, a relatively heavy fine considering the fact that Shriner's Tebowing stunt allegedly brought laughter from the entire audience but won him only a $5 bet.

Pick off plays always carry a prime opportunity for embarrassment, either for the pitcher — if his throw is too high or off line — or the runner, if he happened to stray too far from off base. Still, few pick off plays have ever been more embarrassing than the trick attempt employed by the Delano (Cal.) High baseball team in the video you see below.

As noted by the blog It's Always Sunny in Detroit, with two outs and the bases loaded, Delano desperately needed a way to get out of an inning without allowing any more runs. Rather than risk giving up a game-changing hit, Delano coach Dan Paulson called for a trick play the team calls "El Black."

Now, let's walk through the crafty piece of baseball be-devilment known as El Black, shall we? First, pitcher Davy Aguilar faked a pickoff throw to second base. As soon as he did so, the second baseman rushed over as if he was covering the bag and preparing for a throw.

The trick, of course, was that the throw never came. While everyone in the field reacted as if the ball had soared into the outfield, the pitcher himself still held the ball in his glove. Not knowing this, the runner on third base skipped his way toward home assuming that he could practically trot in with an easy run … only for the pitcher to swivel and gun him out at home with a bullet of a throw from the mound.

The play is a terrifically executed elementary trick play, perhaps second only to the hidden ball trick. While the fake to second certainly isn't unheard of, it's rarely pulled off as cleanly as it was in Delano.

It took 10 years, but a star high school athlete was finally rightfully acquitted of rape and kidnapping charges related to an incident he took no part in, all after already serving five years in jail after he was advised to plea bargain his sentence rather than risk spending 41 years or more locked up.

By all logic, Claire Uhle should have spent the fall of her senior season competing on the Ambler (Pa.) Wissahickon High girls tennis team. For a single day, she was on the team, returning after a junior season in which she qualified for the state singles tournament.

Yet Uhle's fall appearance was for one day, and one day only, for a very simple reason: She needed to focus on her schoolwork to ensure that she would qualify for a scholarship to play tennis at Northern Colorado. The gamble worked, with Uhle qualifying academically thanks to improved grades.

At the same time, bypassing the girls season in the fall brought up a unique opportunity: Uhle still had a season of eligibility, and in Pennsylvania, the boys tennis season is played in the spring. That combination of factors has led to Uhle's emergence as one half of the team's top doubles partnership — a pairing which is expected to qualify for the state tournament — and a spot as the school's number three singles player.

As noted by the Philadelphia Inquirer, the results have been fantastic for Uhle, who said she was spurred to keep playing because she wanted to get more preparation for the Division I competition she'll face beginning in the fall. Uhle finished the regular season 7-1 in singles and was 4-1 in doubles.

Perhaps most significantly, she fit in seamlessly as the only girl on a boys team, an opportunity afforded athletes in Pennsylvania and a few other states which allow girls to play on boys teams despite the existence of girls squads, and vice versa.

"She just blended right in with everybody," Wissahickon boys tennis coach Mark Daniels told the Inquirer. "And I think that's why there was no problem with the guys on the team. They saw how hard she worked. They saw how good she was."

There seems to be an epidemic of crazy umpiring spreading throughout the youth baseball ranks. First, a Little League ump brings out explosive calls which Prep Rally's brotherly baseball blog Big League Stew rightfully compared to the stance of former Mike Tyson Punch Out character Soda Popinski's uppercut.

Now, a new contender for crazy ump of the year has emerged, and his strikeout calls are absolutely out of the normal world because of his wild vocal talents.

As noted in the blog Sweater Punch, the umpire you see above offered up his possessed strikeout calls at a 10-year-old Little League game.

While no one knows for sure what the ump is saying — it does sound like he's uttering something in Spanish — one YouTube commenter claimed his gutteral strikeout call was "Ay Dios mio eso es out!" For those who don't habla Espanol, that means "Oh my God that was an out."

Then again, that phrase is almost indistinguishable from "Adios amigo, eres es out!", which means "See you later friend, you're out!" Naturally, that second interpretation is a bit more mean-spirited than the former, particularly when an umpire is talking about impressionable 10-year-olds.

It's always an awkward transition when a legendary coach steps down, but that switch is made even tougher to adjust to when the man who is taking over for him is still called "the kid" by the departing coach himself.

That's precisely the case in Lafayette, Ind., where 64-year-old Benton (Ind.) Central High baseball coach Gary DeHaven is leaving after a 26-year coaching career at BC and handing the reins for his program over to 23-year-old Tyler Rosenbarger.

In turn, Rosenberger will become one of the two youngest varsity baseball coaches in America, all while having to deal with the reality that he has been on the planet for fewer years than his departing coach has led the program he's about to take over.

"[DeHaven] has won a ton of games and has influenced a lot of people," Rosenbarger, who recently graduated from Purdue and was BC's junior varsity coach this season, told the Lafayette Journal Courier. "He has been a great role model. I hope I can do half the things that he accomplished."
